Default Grape Vines very unwell - why ?

I planted a couple of grape vines in my quintalzinho last year.

The idea was to train them up and over the pergola.

They seemed to do ok till about April this year ( growing to about 6 feet tall, and bearing bunches of grapes. )

However, since April they have literally not grown an inch. They haven't died, as far as I can tell ( most of the leaves are green, and there are small bunches of grapes ). A FEW of the leaves, not many, do look a bit burnt, which I admit may be to do with overdoing the fertilizante ?

However, although I did dose them with a lot of fertilizer in May, when I was going away, they have had none since then.

I was expecting them to at least reach the top of the pergola ( about 9 or 10 feet tall ) and start spreading over the 'roof' of it.

Thoughts ? Remedies ?

On a related subject, is it worth trying to grow grape vines in a container on a balcony ? Or what would be better to try to provide shade, not so easily harmed by those of us who lack green fingers ?
