fiscal number help PLEASE
 

We have recently brought an apartment in Quarteira, Portugal and have just received the bill for our fiscal number. It is 240 odd euros every year. It seems an awful lot of money to have to continually pay out each year. We are still living in the UK and just use this as a holiday home. Is there anybody out there that can advise.

Thats very strange??? our fiscal number was only 6 Euros? I am wondering if it is a type of council tax bill?
I shall ask my portugese freind and get back to as soon as I can...

the bill wont be for your fiscal number as that is a one off payment of around 6 euros. more likely its your yearly tax bill as dolly said earlier.

Thanks for the replies. I will need to check into this further, as this is now our 3rd year of paying this.
Looking at the bill it says the amount of 240 euros is for the "Annual charge for fiscal representation 2007".

The company is Sovereign (Consultoria e Planeamento Fiscal, Lda)-- based in Lagoa. They were recommended by our solicitor.

recommended to do what? do you know what service they provided you in return for this bill?

Sounds like they are your fiscal representative in Portugal. You need to establish with your lawyer what services they provide for their money.

If you are non resident in Portugal, you need Fiscal Representation to pay things like Council tax etc. Sovereign provide this representation and charge you the annual fee, it is nothing to do with your fiscal number.

Anyone resident in the Algarve with their own fiscal number and address can provide fiscal representation for you as long as they are willing to be accountable for your bills.
