It's ILLEGAL here to put them with the refuse.

Many things in Portugal are illegal, however, it doesn't stop the Portuguese disposing of unwanted animals in the dustbin be they alive or dead as the the seven live puppies in a black bin bag recently deposited in a communal bin in Tavira and now advertised on another expat website proves.

*Sigh*...I was merely illustrating that factors of life here can be tough.
You inferred that I wasn't a 'caring' dog owner,as anyone who was, would be happy to take the body of their dog home and bury it.
Well I wasn't,and do not for one second doubt my care and love of my boxer boy,who we rescued from a life of hell here 5 years ago.
Screw you.

"Times will get tougher than they are even now(but they will in the UK also) a quick trip back to scumville normally makes you realise you made the right decision!"

As someone who is briefly back in Scumville for yet another wedding, I concur. Earlier as I looked down a dusty London street, I actually thought "I don't care how long I have to queue for in Portuguese government buildings, it beats being here."

and Joao..your post is full of wisdom :-)

I don't like to compare the two countries, it was our choice to move back here but it is hard to swallow the ridiculous taxes and charges for everything when you are not used to paying them.

Everyone in the UK used to say to my husband he was mad for living over there (was there 15yrs) but I think unless you've lived here you have no idea. I thought I knew more or less what we'd have to fork out for but setting up our business has been an eye opener. If you are self employed you have to start paying social security at €159 a month whether you are earning or not which I had no idea about, so we switched to being a limited company (but had to pay a fine to do so!!) and that is just one bill after another. It does highlight where the UK could tighten up on things though, such as you cannot trade here without insurance and a licence etc which is a good thing, but my god it's expensive and you just don't know whether you'll earn enough to pay back the initial costs! Compulsory green receipt books, compulsory accountant, it just goes on and on.

I think the most shocking for me though is that there is no real difference in earnings whether you wait tables or work in an office. In the UK you know you can earn more managing an office than working in McDonalds, here it's all the same minimum wage because the company owners cannot afford to pay higher social security so keep the salaries low. Office managers, well there isn't such a role, you work in an office and you manage it and get paid the same sh*t wage. I think some people in the UK that live off benefits should come and live here for a while and see how hard the people here work for peanuts, because they have to and have no choice!

great post and totally agree with you. Lots and lots of hidden suprises. If anyone is going into business check out Jay Abrahams books before you do so.

Will have to have a look at those! Not sure if we've discovered all the surprises yet....

Re: Finding it tough!

We got here 18 months ago.
Three close people died back in blighty, I had to have our old dog put down (in my arms, buried on the terrace) and then I decided to grow a third boob which scared the crap out of me.
We went to the local health centre to make an appt with the doc.
We had to wait to weeks to do this as they only make appts on the last Friday of the month.
Got the appt went to doc another two weeks on to be told it was cancelled. Made another appt which was another three weeks on then got a phone call and presumed they said it was cancelled again.
Got my friend who speaks the lingo to confirm this.
Made another appt got cancelled again and was then told poor poor docs mum was ill and thats why she kepy cancelling.
To be quite frank I dont give a shit about her probs as my third tit is growing by the month and Im scared to death.
After 6 months we finally went to a private place and got it seen.
I figured out it probably wasnt cancer by this time as I wasnt dead.
As it was it was a cyst type thing.
I would be ashamed of the UK if any foreigner was treated like that.
I have also got friendly with the local vet who gave me the heads up for the lack of drugs out here, not just for animals, but for people as well.
She couldnt even get a convalescent diet food for a sick dog.
I have to say I am wobbly too and too scared to tell oh.

I really do sympathise with all the problems people have faced and how scaring those might be. But we have got to recognise that PT is essentially just coming out of the "Third World" phase, (with the help of the EU). Many conditions here are about on the same level as Turkey. A lot of immigrants fail to realise that and are shocked when it becomes obvious that PT is definitely not the same as the UK nor can it offer the same services as the UK.
UK services were built on a huge manufacturing base which PT has not got. It better to try and get the best from both countries. I have been here since 1999 and I go back to the NHS when I need treatment.
