Faro Airport Closed

Re: Faro Airport Closed
There is something really odd going on here. The national airport operator has available the completely unused BEJA airport but they chose to make any diversions necessary to Lisbon or Sevilla on Monday and the new changes for today could easily be handled by an airport with no traffic. What is the difference between a couple of hours on a nice warm coach and standing on a wet windy car park

Re: Faro Airport Closed
I doubt that Beja has sufficient infrastructure in place to handle the volume required at short notice.

Re: Faro Airport Closed
There is nobody else using it and they have just spent €35m on upgrading passenger facilities. The air side was a former Portuguese air force which now share. From the air the runway looks pretty big.

Re: Faro Airport Closed
After this latest bought of strong winds and rains, I'm hearing the whole airport has been flooded and more roof has been destroyed.
Also, just received this e-mail:
Also, just received this e-mail:
Adverse weather conditions in Faro have resulted in structural damage to the terminal building at Faro Airport and as a result of this there is a large reduction in the number of check-in desks and services that we are able to provide. We strongly advise passengers to check-in online where possible to minimise large queues and delays. On arrival at the airport please be advised easyJet representatives will manage our flights in order of departure time. We are working hard to ensure that your queuing time does not exceed 15-20 minutes.
All flights currently operating to and from the airport are subject to delays due to restrictions imposed by Air Traffic Control.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused, please be rest assured that easyJet are working closely with Faro airport authorities to ensure full services are resumed as soon as possible.
Thank you for your understanding at this time.
Yours sincerely,
easyJet Customer Services

I believe there are a few flights to the Cape Verde Islands and yes the structral facilities should be adequate. I was last there in July 2009 and the buildings were almost complete. But to opperate for diversions they would need a lot of trained staff that I doubt they have.

The passenger facilities are a new build to the West of the runway whilst the Military are to the East.

Re: Faro Airport Closed
Literally no flights use BAJA there was a holiday charter by Sunville in the summer (operated by Monarch) but that has now finished. I think the Madera and Cape Verde flights were just part of the opening celebrations
