Smile Re: Faro airport car rental tax.

Excuse me butting in on a country forum I'm not part of - I live in the Philippines.
For the past umpteen years I've rented cars in the States and almost without exception if you choose to rent from the airport office AND the vehicles are physically on airport property such as the car park ,there is an "airport location tax". It ranged from $5 to $20 depending on the airport.
Even if I looked to book direct over the internet the quote always showed an airport location tax as a seperate item.
Wherever possible I used to rent from a downtown office near my hotel especially if the hotel had a free airport shuttle. If not then I'd balance the two way shuttle cost against the airport tax.
I have just come back from Hawaii and enquired about renting a vehicle there for a couple of days. The prices were very similar for a mid size at $48-$50 a day. BUT add insurance and it doubled! The National Car guy did say if I went to the airport to rent it would cost about $15 more due to airport tax.
The OPs cost of approx 67 euros for a weekend is cheap!
All i can say is read the small print carefully or book through an agency such as holiday Autos who will quote you a price including all taxes etc.
Oh, I've just looked at Budget for a car at Faro airport from Friday 6th June return on Monday 9th. They quote 70pounds including all taxes and specifically mention Airport tax is included.

just my shillings worth.

Is it a tax and therefore goes to government or is it ANA seeking to increase revenue or appease the large rental firms?

ANA a French CĀŗ now hold the "rights" to Faro - Lisboa - Porto - Acores + Beja (for what its worth) Airports.

And as the sole controllers off the above they are free to do as they wish so it is obvious all they are trying to do is maximize there margins.

Found the enclosed link which should explain all

Fair enough, they can charge as they like for business done at the airport; But what about high charges for shuttlebus pickups [when the bus happens to belong to a rental car firm]?
That just can't be right, that has to be illegal.
A passenger should be free to use whatever form of transport desired, without bias as to where he/she is going after leaving the airport.

I spoke this morning with a friend who is a director of one of the Algarve firms involved.

I understand from him that a judicial order (Providencia Cautelar) has been issued against ANA.pt while this issue is legally examined.

Presumably the new charges don't apply to hire companies in Car Park 4 then, as it appears only those without "facilities" are liable to pay them.

Sadly no, those who operate out of P4 are affected and I understand charging.

ANA operate a Facebook page for Faro Airport. Can I suggest that anyone who does not appreciate the manner in which ANA are operating go to their Facebook page and leave an appropriate comment for everyone else to see.

The reply from ANA that Stephen provoked (http://www.ana.pt/en-US/Topo/institu...spx?fromlist=1) suggests that the P4 operators are not the target of this 'tax'.

I agree with Richard, as my interpretation of the link article is not P4 companies who operate at Faro as I assume they are licenced to use P4. Certainly they don't use shuttles to ferry their passengers as the cars are at the airport, who do seem to be the target. However, the atricle was dated February so perhaps things have changed?

The full regulation is here. If my theory is correct then I would expect the companies operating out of P4 to welcome the change as it would apply to other even lower cost companies, not to them. However they seem to be acting as if it does apply to the P4 companies.
