Expiry of cheque

The Allianz sent me a cheque (reimbursement of medical expenses) which my neighbour retrieved from our postbox. I don't know when we will return to Portugal. Any idea how long I have before the cheque expires? Unfortunately she is not fit enough to take it to the bank.

From the Bank of Portugal :

22. Is there any time limit on presenting a cheque for payment?

Cheques must be presented for payment within the time limit established in the Uniform Law on Cheques. As a rule, this is eight days from the issue date. Cheques presented for payment after the legal limit has expired may be returned by credit institutions for the following reasons: ‘cheque revogado – apresentação fora do prazo’ (revoked cheque – cheque submitted after expiry date) - upon indication of the payer – or ‘cheque apresentado fora do prazo’ (cheque submitted after expiry date) – upon decision of the credit institution.

8 days? Blimey! A company writes out a cheque on a Monday in your favour, posts it (in Portugal!) and if your lucky you'll receive it by the end of the week. That's 4 of your eight days gone (assuming you don't count day 1). Then there's the weekend and if it's a public holiday on Monday you have only Tuesday to pay it in. So you have to cancel your dental appointment and rush down to the bank so you've still got time to pick up your visitors from the airport.

It's 6 months in the UK.

Post from Lisbon for us is taking 4 weeks at the moment.
International post doesn't arrive at all.

Thanks for all your input. Eight day limit to present a cheque?? That must be a joke🙄. I'll write to the bank and see what they have to say.

We have received Portuguese checks in the past and it is certainly longer than eight days. It was months. Check with Bank.
