20 working days according to the google email translation. Best to do within 20 days, ignoring the 'working' bit, just in case.

Re. The submission of UK DL along with form 37- it seems strange that the same form is required again, especially considering that the tick boxes are for the earlier application process i.e. copies of driving licence and not the original licence ,which we are enclosing. Anyway, I suppose this is their way....

I forgot to mention above, in reply to wellinever - the expiry date on the PDF bridge licence they sent me is in just 2 months - mid-April. Maybe they are optimistic in getting my new plastic licence issued by then.

The date on my extended temporary paper licence is 28 Aug 21. That is very optimistic in my opinion since I have been waiting 6 months already. I can be very sarcastic in lockdown/house arrest.

The reason I need to consider all of this is that I may return to UK as and when possible by air from faro.(hopefully end March, if Portugal has been taken off the Red list by then))
My UK car is sorned but insured, and so I think that as long as I still have a UK DL registered with DVLA, then I should be OK driving.
But leaving a UK licence in Portugal along with all documents (originals) as well as having had an online medical done, so a friend can send them all off..
Only thing I cant do until return is to go have photo taken
Reason for this I want to bring my UK car as a resident tax free to matriculate in Portugal. Just not sure who will insure a UK reg car.
Further am I even allowed to drive a foreign plated car as a resident. If not how do you get one here.
I have an international licence for Portugal, but not Spain, so will need to get a Spanish type for the bit between Santander and the Portuguese border.
Life dont get much more complicated.

There's no such thing as an International licence. There's an International Driving Permit but that's only valid when accompanied by a National driving licence, without it an IDP is worthless so you might want to reconsider leaving your UK licence behind.

Re temp licence expiry

I never received one.
Also never submitted the requested dvla declaration (due post office as usual)

Yet I've had the email asking me to confirm the info for issue of my permanent and to supply original mod37 and UK driving licence.

Listening to this thread it appears IMT individuals are setting their own requirements.

Section 102 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.
A person is disqualified for obtaining a licence authorising him to drive a motor vehicle of any class so long as he is the holder of another licence authorising him to drive a motor vehicle of that class, whether the licence is suspended or not.

Section 103.

A person is guilty of an offence if, while disqualified for holding or obtaining a licence, he—
(a) obtains a licence, or

(b) drives a motor vehicle on a road.

I have 2 licences.
All that happened is that I applied for my over 70 licence in the UK.
Nothing unusual in that (is there)....(I am sure you will have a law to quote if you think there is)
After 4 weeks I had received nothing.
So I called DVLA to tell them.
After phone checks of my identity, they said they would send another (same name same address)
2 Days later a licence turned up..........4 days after that another one arrived......

Here you go,

Section 21(2) of The Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regulations 1999.
If at any time while a duplicate licence is in force the original licence is found, the person to whom the original licence was issued, if it is in his possession, shall return it to the Secretary of State, or if it is not in his possession, but he becomes aware that it is found, shall take all reasonable steps to take possession of it and if successful shall return it as soon as may be to the Secretary of State.

It's never been a secret that it's illegal to hold 2 driving licences.

It doesn't matter which one of the two you send back.

Who cares? I wouldn’t send either of them back. I have legally held two British passports for 30 years. What’s wrong with two British driving licences? You did not ask for two but they sent them to you. And now that the UK is not in the EU the process needs to work for you to be able to drive in the UK and the EU. Stick with it 💪
