We’re still quite young for pension )))) several tens of years... and brexit has nothing common with EHIC as she has 5yrs residence already.

If she's a Brit, it might, as they might view her as non-EU from that date? Or is that when she might change from 'temporary residence' to being eligible for permanent residence?

She’s non-EU with 5 years residence and EHIC expiry date has nothing common with “theoretical” Brexit day.
I’m Brit and they issued me EHIC till 2022 (I have my residence certificate for 5 years as well)
And she’s definitely eligible to apply again no matter if Brexit happens or not.
So absolutely no sense.
I’ve already asked them if it was an error, waiting for reply.

Portuguese government confirmed (by law) that any Brit who registered a residence in Portugal (got residence cert) will benefit from all EU granted perks in Portugal no matter if Brexit happens or not and wether it would be hard or soft one )

This is what we were told in Austria. We have healthcare based on S1 form. But Ehic has to come from UK.
And if Brexit happens our healthcare will end. Austria implied to offer a voluntary scheme for which we will have to contribute based on income. We need to apply within 6 weeks after Brexit. Wait and see.
