Default Donkey Sanctuary in Mafra urgently needs help

I hope it is alright to post this!!

The Associação Para a Preservação do Burro- ‘Burricadas’ is non-governmental organisation, created in March 2007, working to preserve this rare breed, which aims to preserve the donkey and its traditional uses in Portugal, with particular reference to the above mentioned region. Its headquarters are located in the county of Mafra, where the Donkey Shelter ‘Abrigo do Jumento’ also can be found.
The Donkey Shelter’s main aim is to become a rescue centre for some old, abandoned and ill-treated animals, in need of a well-deserved retirement after a long hard working life.
In order to finance the running of the shelter, namely paying for the animal’s feed and veterinary help, Burricadas runs an adoption scheme, whereby any person interested in supporting the project, but unable to keep one of these animals, may symbolically adopt one of our donkeys for a year, therefore engaging in the work of the association, ensuring their welfare.
In order to promote the activities of the association, as well as raising awareness for the donkey, Burricadas plans a whole series of activities throughout the region, like donkey and carriage trips along the old country paths. In the foreseeable future, we are aiming to develop an intervention work in the area of therapy for the disabled using the donkeys, so that these animals will fulfil the noble task to support the rehabilitation of children and people with special needs.

Hiya Sue,

Does the sanctuary have a website? How much does it cost to sponsor a Burro? What other ways (apart from sponsorship) are there how people may help?

Good luck with what you're doing

First of all, we would like to express our appreciation for your interest in our project.

Taking into account the difficulties that we face in our work, as we devote ourselves to the welfare of needy animals, as well as to the preservation of a substantial part of our cultural heritage, it is most rewarding and encouraging to find people keen to support us.

There are several kinds of viable support. One of those is the ‘Adopt a Donkey Scheme’.
This form of support is ideal to all of those who would like, but cannot keep a donkey, due to personal restraints. Hence, people can adopt a donkey for a minimal fee of 25 €/year (30 € for international adoptions), sharing the costs and the care that keeping a donkey at the Shelter entails. These ‘Adoptive Parents’ select their favourite donkey and in return they’ll receive the donkey’s Description, a photograph and the respective Adoption Certificate.

This year we are also planning to launch a Newsletter for the Shelter, broadcasting news about the activities of the Association Burricadas and the donkeys under our care to all ‘Adoptive Parents’ on regular basis.

Another form of support is the effective loan of donkeys that come to Shelter, due to distressing reasons (usually abuse or negligence). In such situations the Association tries to find suitable loan homes, where these animals may spend the rest of their lives in safety and comfortably, so that we can carry on re-homing new cases and addressing new situations.

In these circumstances the Association assesses the candidate’s living conditions, visiting the home and filling in a questionnaire. Should the candidate fulfil all the requirements to ensure the donkey’s welfare; he/she will be enrolled in an Loan Homes list. In due course the candidate would be informed of any new cases coming into the Shelter, until a suitable donkey is found. In such cases, the loan home would be expected to cover all expenses with the rescue of the donkey (transport, vet bills etc.), until the donkey was re-homed. These costs are variable, according to each case.

If selected, the loan home would be informed about the arrival of new cases, the costs involved in the rescue, in order to decide whether or not to accept the donkey.
As from there, the donkey will be under the care of the loan home. In the meantime, all parties involved would be signing an agreement, whereby the loaner agrees to provide the welfare of the animal, as well as the correct care. Should there be a breach of the agreement, the donkey could be removed and re-homed with a different person.

As such, we are ensuring that the donkeys will be on loan only with people who can provide them with better life conditions. Each animal is an individual in its own right, who deserves to be treated in a respectful and caring manner. Our main aim is to guarantee the welfare of all our animals, and consequently we are very strict when re-homing the donkeys.

With our Best Regards,

Diogo Pimenta
(Director of the Association for the Preservation of the Donkey- Burricada
