Default Dash Cams

I know they are illegal in Portugal, but I think of no better way of protecting oneselves against insurance claims. They have become very popular in the UK and the insurance companies like them.

I am not sure what the objections are over here, but I have a good idea. They are relatively cheap and speed calibrated by satellite.

They can also be used in parking areas identify those drivers that keep reversing until they hit something.

I have no vestive interest in them but can see lots of benefits. I wonder if in the very near future these will become legal?

The dash cams are illegal in Portugal is a myth.

I have a fairly high ranking GNR friend & was sitting in his car about a year ago & spotted one on his dashboard so asked him about it.

Apparently, they're perfectly legal & can be used in accident claims & court cases etc but using them for candid camera type things is illegal.

Before buying or mounting a dashcam, I'd make sure of the rules...... what is "OK" for a GNR officer may not be "OK" for you!

The laws around the use of images are fairly strict. Some time ago a neighbour went to the GNR with video of someone attempting to climb over his main gate, only to be subjected to the third-degree because there were no signs posted warning people that they were being filmed. Although the camera was inside his property, it could obviously film people outside (as the suspect had not yet gained entry)....

Certainly no intention of debating anyone's opinion or point of view, merely just curious....

If filming people without permission is the big issue in Portugal (whether dashcam cctv etc), how does it work governing drones?
They are allowed for use in Portugal but obviously require the filming of people without their permission.

As with CCTV, the problems may only occur once you try to use the images........

I was wondering about that,
I was sat outside a bar yesterday and noticed a camera in the corner of the ceiling scanning g the area that I was in, and wondered how they go on.

So are you saying the legal issue is really the use of the images, not the taking of images?

I seem to remember reading here or somewhere else of someone receiving a visit from GNR after a neighbour reporting someone for merely installing cctv.

Living in a very scenic photographic location I anticipated the daily coach loads of tourists taking photos, but hadn't thought about the almost daily hovering drones filming me in my private rear garden DOH!
