Hmmm -window grilles are not a tradition in Portugal as they are in Spain, but if I lived in an area full of foreigners, I guess I'd take precautions too!
The Alentejo is a little different - I must remember to tell my vizinha to lock her door (but I guess she'll have to shut it first!).
Up here, I do keep my gates closed - those sheep can really eat their way through a garden quickly.

The house of ours in Tavira is in the centre of town, in a street of Portuguese. We are the only English in our street. Also happily, the Portuguese behave in just the same as neighbours in Yorkshire and keep an eye on everybody else's property at all times. However, as I have said before the Portuguese in this street do also have window grilles on the downstairs windows.
