Default Buying a car in Portugal- assistance

Hello

we have recently moved to the Algarve Portugal and are ready to buy a car, we are learning Portuguese but at the moment have only perfected ordering coffee and cake which might not be much use in car buying.

we are only buying a cheaper car ( and will be buying from a dealer most likely )so it’s not a huge investment but we’re wondering if anyone knows of a company that offers services in buying a car,

we have located a few vehicles that are all potential purchases so just wondered if anyone has used a service or know of one

thanks Sarah

What "services" exactly are you looking for? Buying a car is straight forward, particularly from a dealer who will do most of the work. Find the car, personally I'd recommend Stand Virtual (a bit like auto trader in the UK to which a good proportion of dealers add all their stock) . Larger dealers will do everything at point of sale. With smaller dealers or buying from an individual you will both need to visit an IMT office together to register the sale and put the car into your name. You need a NIF and your passport.

We have just bought a car through Cars and Cars in Faro. We had excellent service and they arranged the insurance for us. Very polite, they speak excellent English and it was quick and painless.

Thanks for the information, ( sorry for the delay I managed to lock myself out of the website) I did find one on stand virtual in the end and we collect tomorrow. The dealer has done the paperwork to put it in my name so that was quite easy. I think I may have to arrange the tax but it was a much easier transaction that I was expecting so thanks again. 👍

The tax will have been paid by the previous owner - no refund upon selling. Once the car is registered in your name, you will be responsible for paying the next annual tax due to Finanças, and that will be payable during the month in which the anniversary of your car’s 1st registration falls; same month each year of its life.
