British foods in Northern Portugal?
 

I understand from The Portugal News and other sources that there are places in Southern Portugal where one can buy British foods but I have been unable to locate any such shops in the north. Does anyone know of any purveyors of British goods in or near Porto?

Why ever would you want British food with all the fresh food as close as you would need. What is so special that you can't do without, i even make my own Bacon and very good it is to. The only thing i haven't been able to buy was Juniper berries and i needed them for my Bacon. But on a trip back i collected some to last me.

Did you know that there are companies that with ship stuff here, Amazon and some of the big supermarkets.

Peter, Thank you for responding. I do appreciate the local food very much: the plentiful veggies, the cherries, plums and figs, the octopus, the morcella, and especially the sensational sheep cheeses. And, having lived outside the UK all my adult life, I am very accustomed to doing without the foods of my childhood years. But there are a couple of things I especially like and can buy where I live in the US but not here. One of them is not even British; that is cocoa. Just simple, plain cocoa -- can't find it even at the largest supermarkets in Porto. (None of that sweetened, hot chocolate stuff for me.) Then I would be happy to have a little Marmite and some oatcakes occasionally.

Anyone importing good Marmalade, decent English Breakfast tea, a range of breakfast cereals, fresh real orange juice, etc..

All at proper affordable prices, will make a fortune in our area

Surely it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to export these by sea from UK, and not drive them overland or use air transport.

intermarche, Apolonia and Iceland all have the products you want in the algarve.

Peter - we can't all do as you do.
If the person in the next apartment to my holiday home starts keeping pigs with a view to making his own bacon a lot of people will be unhappy.
Also we lived in France and in a supermarket in Bordeaux they had a very large Portugues section - nothing wrong with a little bit of what you fancy.
Peter every time i see you post since i read the 'must have juniper berries' i can't help but picture you in the hermit screen in the 'life of brian'

Intermarché? Personally I wouldn't shop there. Their nearest branch is 20 kilometres away, which for us would equal €20 in public transport return fares, and long walks to get to. I dislike their web site

They have no proper online list for their products and prices. All they provide is a brochure of the kind of junk mail which floods my letter box. How can know what they have unless I go there?

Last time I was in an Intermarche they had nothing of real interest or value for me.

Intermarche stocks according to their customer base; so their Algarve stores have more "expat" products.
The Lagos branch is quite good for variety, but I find their prices for the "special" items is exorbitant.
Unfortunately the British food store where we used to go just folded; the third one in three years to go under in Lagos.
I guess it's a tough business.
I order our tea online; it doesn't work out much cheaper, but we get the good stuff we like.
If you hunt around on the internet, sometimes you can find a shop that will ship for reasonable money. It depends what it is you want.

Sri Pete: I also like a lot the 100% cocoa. Round here (lisbon area) i can get it easely in Continente and Jumbo.

Be warned that the labeling even for a PT person may be misleading, you have to check out twice to learn the thing is actually 100% cocoa.

have you tried the supermarket in "el corte ingles"(think thats how its written) not sure if they have a huge selection but and I was not really looking when I went but I did pick up bisto gravy granules:thumbup:

The fact is that Continente [Modelo] is far closer and better stocked.
