Re: Bingo for Biscuits
What really amazes me is that the main news in the UK have nothing better, no more serious issues, to report as their main headline than this crap several times a day - How the pinko Ar*e bandits of the BBC must love their BINGO.
I saw this reported on another web as 'THE DEATH OF THE ALGARVE' I'm surprised you aren't burning Portuguese shops and spraying acid over their children - that'd be fair and reasonable How i miss the tatooed sheep of the UK - bunch of wankers I can imagine the typical chat in the locals around our green and pleasant land 'I'll never go to the Algarve again, did you know you can't pay illegal bingo games there on the off chance of winning a bottle of booze - its Skegness for me from now on,, that'll teach em BAAAAAAAA' Rant over - please feel free to delete at anytime :) |
Re: Bingo for Biscuits
Steve, my thoughts on the many reactions I have heard and read from the " expats can do no wrong party of the Algarve " make yours sound like it was written by Enid Blyton.
As the bar owner would have known the law and will now be full of members of the above mentioned party they will be laughing all the way to the bank. They obviously do not give a toss about the poor unfortunates they landed in the " brown stuff ". |
Re: Bingo for Biscuits
No my point is how ridiculous is the amount of press coverage
The England i remember had enough serious issues to fill the daily headlines 100 times over - and this simple - page 1 of the psychology manual - deflection for beginners - to distract the stupid and gullable from all of the real issues concerning the UK is an absolute disgraceful waste of the resources of the BBC Regarding the actual issue - they should have closed down the bar, fined the owner and sent everyone else off with a warning - 1 small paragraph in the centre of a local newspaper would have sufficed |

Everyone accepts that people who work and live full time in a foreign county need to understand and abide by the rules of that country. Therefore even though we might feel it was rather heavy handed of the police and probably motivated by local jealousies we can have limited sympathises with the owners. However: 2. When you visit a foreign country you have the right to assume that bars you visit are operating under local and national licenses and policies. HOW THE HECK WERE THE VISITORS EXPECTED TO KNOW THE OWNERS WERE OPERATING AGAINST LOCAL LAWS? It was simply unfair and therefore comments on the damage this event will do to tourism are perfectly justified. 3. People are talking about this because they care about the Algarve. If you have lived or visited there for many years you will be sad at what is happening - at how difficult it is for the bars and companies to make a living. In the 20 years I have been coming there is no doubt in my mind that the visitors have reduced substantially but this won't have helped. I can only assume that when you visit any foreign country you fully explore in great detail documentation for that country (so I assume you are multilingual also) to ensure you cannot possibly be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Get a life. |

Elizabeth - thank you for sharing.
Today does seem to be a rant day - something about gob-sh&te Brits always seems to bring out the worst in me - thats why i left the UK and have no plans on going back. My point is that really 'people shouldn't be saying anything' much - because it should never have been a major topic on the BBC newsif you read my next comment you'll see we agree. ''Regarding the actual issue - they should have closed down the bar, fined the owner and sent everyone else off with a warning - 1 small paragraph in the centre of a local newspaper would have sufficed'' Regarding the 'caring about the Algarve' and nonesense like this 'reducing visitor numbers' - you've had a go at me - in return i think you're just an hysterical typically over-reacting Brit - typical victim of the sheep mentality issue that seems to pervade the new UK way of thinking. If you seriously think a large numbers of potential vistors to the Algarve - from all nationalities will stay away because they can't go and play ilegal Bingo games for a bottle of plonk you really have got something seriously wrong with you. As for your last statement - stick it where the sun don't shine |
Re: Bingo for Biscuits
The real villians are the bar owners , they knew the laws of Portugal and have landed their clients whose money they were happy to pocket in trouble.
There is no arguement that the GNR or the laws of Portugal unfairly treated the customers but that is the law in Portugal. But we should not lose site of who is really responsible for this mess. None of the press coverage bothered to mention that what the bar owners was doing would also be illegal in the UK. I would like to see an apology from the PT government and one from the bar owners in the media , TV and press but I would also like to win the Euro lottery and the chances of either are just as remote. |

If you knew anything about the press you would know it is quirky items like this that attract the press. It is called balanced press - put in to lift all the other less easy items we have to digest. So it is unlikely the press will avoid commentating on this type of item which is an interesting talking point whether you like it or not. |
Re: Bingo for Biscuits
Well it never made our local news must just have been a Yourkshire thing. and I have not seen it on the national news.
As we no longer buy a daily newspaper we managed to avoid the Portugal bashing. |
Re: Bingo for Biscuits
I can see both sides of this problem ,but sadly common sense is not a Portuguese trait !

Re: Bingo for Biscuits
That may be the case but the owners did break the law, as they would have done in the UK where a lsence is also needed..
I have not heard that they are offering to pay the fines which went to charity anyway NOT to the government. |
