Re: Police recruitment Western Australia police
Thanks for the replies folks. Appreciate you taking the time to chip in. The missus and myself are going to let the dust settle for a few weeks after this weeks disappointment, but intend to re group and come back from the angle of her applying for a 189, and if successful then me applying through the interstate route. A little more convoluted, and some other considerations to be taken into account but it's a chance at least. From my reading of it, should her visa be granted we would have a year to "activate" it. In that we've effectively 12 months from it being granted to having to land in Aus? If so that would give some breathing space for applying. Although my understanding is that I'd have to attend testing, interviews etc in Perth. Could anyone conform if I've the right end of the stick?

Have a read of the Immigration forum for Aus, and ask in there about any concerns with getting your wife a visa

once she is granted a skills visa you all have to visit Aus to validate it within 12 months of doing the medicals/police checks - whichever has the earlier date. After that you have another 4 years within which you can come and go as you wish before you need either a Return Residents Visa or Citizenship

That's grand Pollyanna. We have both been reading through the site for a wee bit as well as the immigration website and that's pretty much what I'd taken away from it. Element of comfort in having it confirmed though! Appreciate it.

Pincher, I'd be correct in my assumption that interstate was the entry you took? If so, my understanding that while I could submit my application from UK I would travel to Perth for testing/interviews/physicals? If that's the case, do you know if they can all be covered in one visit? Also, any ideas of time frames from application to testing through this route? Our thought process is that if successful on a 189, as a family we could travel out for a couple of weeks for testing/recce and activate the visa at the same time.

That's right. I applied under Interstate. I under went the testing in Perth all in one week:
Monday - PEE in morning. Physical tests in afternoon.
Tuesday - Psychological testing.
Thursday - Psychological interview in morning followed by formal interview.
I applied at the beginning of November, got an acknowledgement 2 weeks later and then at he beginning of December an e-mail asking when I could come over for the testing. I went out on the 08/02 and stayed for just over a week. I also used the trip the validate my visa.
If you're an applicant from outside of the metro Perth area then you do the week, otherwise you go one step at a time. There were 5 other '4 Dayers' with me and we did the PEE with about 30 others in 2 groups. There were 3 other ex-Brit cops applying who were already out there on PR visas.
The post interview stage has been a long, long process. Waiting for e-mails has been really stressful, especially with all the involuntary waking up at 04:00 to check for them.
I've only just done my medical so hopefully should get a start date any time soon. I was hoping for the June course, which I can still do, but as things look at the moment it may well be August I'll be offered.

Re: Police recruitment Western Australia police
I've not started a new thread as the title of one may cover it. So here goes. I've just been knocked back from the latest WAPol campaign, failing to get through the paper sift. I've just shy of ten years in the job, and although in a "specialist" post for the past seven, all of my service has been frontline, operational, uniformed policing. Even if recruiting again next year, given the service parameters currently specified, I'd be over the ten year point so unlikely to be able to submit an application.
And now to the point. My other half is a midwife. From researching, it's feasible we may be eligible to emigrate on a 189 visa with her being the main applicant. If so, it would be my intention to apply through lateral entry.
Now.... Anybody else gone down this route who might offer advice or guidance? I've a number of thoughts with regards this route. If I've been knocked back at such an early stage of the transitional application, is it likely this will have any bearing should I apply through the lateral transfer? Are there any service length restrictions or current role/experience issues if applying through the lateral transfer route?
My main concern I suppose would be making the jump having resigned at this end, finding alternative employment while going through the process in Australia, and the possibility of not getting though as a lateral transferee having made the leap.
Any words of wisdom, guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
