Police Pensions
 

Hi all,

I have spoken to a pension adviser who stated that I can get a lump sum from my 16 year pension in the UK and invest it in a Canadain one. However I need a Canadian pension adviser to assist.

Has anyone transferred their UK Police pension to a Canadian civil pension?

If so can you post how you managed it or for those of you already in the CPS do you know of an adviser in Calgary I can contact?

hi,

With regards to your police pension lump sum, was this a drastically reduced figure compared to the amount you paid into it? Obviously I understand that you lose the employers contributions.The amount you paid in over the years( which was not subject of tax) will reduce by the rel. tax band applicable at the time and an admin fee....... is this the case ?

I have eight years of service and am thinking along the same lines and transferring pension when I join CPS.

I have several friends here in Canada who transferred their police pensions from the UK. They say that the legislation is far more favourable here. I can put you in touch with them or the person they used if you like.

I have contacted the police pension people and have recieved a forecast for a deferred pension i.e. wait till I'm 60.

For 17 years service it works out around £12k a year for me or £40k lump sum and £8k a year.

I have then asked for a settlement figure of what I can take out of the country and re invest in a civil scheme in canada.

I can take £95K or about $210k depending on the exchange rate!

TAX FREE I might add.

I am in contact with a pensions adviser in Calgary and if you would like his details I will galdly send them to you.

I am looking at investing the 95k with a view of getting it, as a pension in 13 years time, when I'm 50.

Anything else you need just ask.

Hi,

I am about to tf to CPS. I have 12 yrs UK Pension. Overall is it best to freeze in UK or take and re-invest. I'mworking on getting 15yrs CPS pension in with 12 yrs UK. Any advice would be appreciated.

Benjy,

I think you answered yourself...... 'Freeze in the UK or re-invest.' Freezing means you do not grow and it stays as one fixed amount. Re-investing means growing more and bigger amount. I have transfered my 15 yr pension and I now get it at 55 rather than at 60, and it is currently growing well. I know an excellent advisor when the time comes. Just PM me.

I am still receiving quite a few requests for my friend's information regarding UK pension transfers. I am completely new to this site. My wife has been on it for the last two weeks, while I trudged through the multitude of [pages on the application forms. I'm a serving offcier in Gwent with 11 years in now.

You seem to have done your homework in relation to pensions. Would you mind giving me the details of the company you are using in Canada? Also, what happens to the PMAS schemes? Do you have to cash those in when you leave the British force? Or can you keep them going?

I'm sure that now I've sent off the aplication form that I will be on this forum a lot more.

You can keep the PMAS going as long as they are paid from a UK bank account. Its easy to do we have informed them and its buisness as usual. Just waiting for the last one to mature.

Everything has gone off now, just biting my nails. Getting my fitness level up as well. How long was it from the time that you submitted the application from to when they told you you had got through?

I don't think I have ever been so nervous.

By the way, expect a phone call or an e-mail from a lanky londoner that is prone to accidents as well. i think Speng is after a move out there as well, he is just trying to persude his other half to go.

I have been told that the Queensland Police pension scheme, Qsuper, is not approved by the UK government for the transfer of a UK police pension. Does anyone know of a good scheme in Oz which is on the approved list ??
