expenses
i landed last week, starting with edmonton next mth. maybe i have been ignorant, but i thought it worthwhile in case i haven't missed something, to point out the money you are going to go through when you get here. i should imagine this will apply to calgary too. yes they are mandatory, and you have to pick/go where they nominate.
boots parade, $200
boots patrol, $300
gym kit, $190
cpr course(if you are over a year since your last first aid you have to redo the cpr bit), $65
exchange drivers licence, $70
register car, $80
insure car (5yr old suv 11 years no claims, 37yr old) $1100 per yr.
health care, $90
i'm sure there is more, i seem to be going through money like water, some things are cheap, pound for dollar, for instance mcdonalds meal $4 instead of £4. but others are expensive, cheapest bottle of wine £6. queen size duvet $200, 2 chicken breasts $6, first class stamp $1.20
be prepared. have plenty of disposable cash with you.

mmm - money like water - god, does that sound familiar - we have just about stopped shopping now - one month in !
Hubby collected all his 'kit' last week - no surprises or expenses for Calgary so far - but he will have to pay $250 for his training books and that is deducted from salary in little chunks !
No known costs for boots - parade or otherwise - and no gym kit known about yet, although I suspect new t-shirts will be purchased regardless !
He has been given patrol boots and parade shoes/boots.
Don't know about CPR certificate - I suspect that will be discussed on an orientation day next week - which is also mandatory and done in your own time.
Ditto ref other (car) costs mentioned above.

Re: expenses
couple more for you, home buyers survery on the house $350, life assurance on mortgage of 250,000 $60. training shoes, like you to have 2 pairs, one outdoor one in, at least $120 for a decent pair. house and contents cover, house valued at 465,000, cost to rebuild, flood to cellar, cover for individual items etc, $530 for the year. petrol currently around $1 a litre, sounds cheap, but driving a 2.7l v6 (which is considered quite girly over here(and i can say that now, p.c. what that eh?)) with the air conditioning on as its 91f at the moment, and you actually see the petrol gauge move down as you drive so it adds up. solicitor to buy house. $1500
that said, instead of £4 for a huge starbucks frappa thing, its $4. swings, roundabouts.
i shall continue to avail my financial incompatancy to those that are interested, not many it seems.

Re: expenses
i doubt given this that we will be able to save much at first, my better half was very good at this, it get better though, you will get a shift allowance after training, not sure how much though, then overtime, or special duties over here is plentiful, court is only on rest days at double time and public holidays, of which there are plenty are at triple time!
some more spends, chicken is mega dear, 3 pieces of chicken breast,$8, but 2 huge pieces of sirloin steak, couldn't fit one in a normal frying pan, $10, so i hope you like your beef. bag mixed salad leaves $3.99, large punnet strawberries $5.50. big box kellogs $5

Re: expenses
not been paid yet, so let you know, believe it is around $1700 bi weekly take home, there are quite a few deductions for pensions etc and tax is similar to uk, if not a little higher, i think i worked out the total overall deductions from my old salary compared to over here, varied only by 1 or 2 % more.

Hi Guyz and Gals. Keep all the info coming matey peeps as it makes good reading. My paperwork is going to the selection panel this month and it is all good background stuff for me should I be successful (when!). I must admit it is scary but equally exciting and as a family we can hack it no problem. No doubt good days and bad days but hey ho! I find all the bits and bats re prices for the training interesting and will be keeping an eye on all posts. If I dont get there fellaz then keep smiling, good luck and live the dream!!

What, in Edmonton - or Canada in general ?? I'm going to have to say that will scare a lot of people and it must very much depend on your outgoings, especially the size of your mortgage which is going to be the big one. I'm going to disagree on the $6k per month remark for now - but come back to me in a year! We have colleagues living reasonably well on his one police salary in Calgary.
Take home for PC whilst in training is going to be about $3800 per month. After training, to some degree, I understand, it's up to you. If you want or can do the overtime, you can have it paid or banked as time - to be taken off at a later date (ie, add it on to your poor annual leave!).
And if you have to do the court dates or public holidays, you are more than fairly remunerated ...
Perhaps some of the regulars on here may wish to comment ! Are you guys muddling by OK on one salary - or are both of you working full or part-time?

Couldn't agree more! Rae, good comments too. He may not want to be stopped by you as a copper, but I'm sure you are jumping hurdles to deal with this man, or maybe not!
Some people may have money, but that does not make them God's gift to the world.
Is Vic There, wake up, the world would survive without you and the BE forums would certianly be a better place without your posts.

speaking of which back to the point of this.
rogers mobile, basic plan with free phone, $25, be aware though this is basic, i don't have voicemail or even caller i.d., so if i miss a call don't know who it is.
mortgage deal just got, 5.79%, make sure you get a broker with no fees, to deal with you, or arrangements with the mortgage company, locked in for 5yrs with a 3mth intrest penalty should you pull out within the 5yrs, the variable rate open mortgages are running at around 8% apparently.
to give you an idea, a $220,000 mortgage is $1,279 per mth, $230,000 is $1,338, this can be paid bi-weekly so you pay off an extra payment a year, but means some mths you pay 3 times, or bi monthly where its just twice a month. this may seem obvious, my apologies, i wrote this is as i don't have a great deal of financial accumen, so for others like me who just want the figures and no flannel thought this thread may help.

Re: expenses
I thought you were arrogant on the "Exchange" thread but having read these posts I think you are unbelievable! I completely agree with Rae's comments about you. I have nothing to do with the police - only came on here to read your posts but you are doing no one any favours. People work long and hard to emigrate and it is not a bed of roses for everyone. Some support would be more helpful!
