Change of occupation
 

Hi there

My partner and I are looking into leaving the UK. My partner is a PC and has been for 4/5 years. The problem we are having is that no country will accept direct transfers, therefore we will have to move where ever we end up going and he will have to find a job for the meantime. Is there any other PCs that had to do this and if so what did you do? BTW he studied law and had a degree in policing if this is any help!

Can't help you with advice regarding getting into policing abroad, but just wanted to wish you and your OH all the best with your plans - I certainly don't blame your OH wanting to escpae UK policing with all the nasty changes going on.

Hi,

You might get some more specific answers if you know which countries you are considering and how you plan to get the required visas.
Depending which country you plan to head to, could mean the difference between waiting for a couple of years, or 10 years before your partner can apply for the police again.

Thanks for the reply. We are aware on how long it will take and have looked into visas etc, that is not the issue, the issue us what other occupations are an option with a career as a PC and a degree in law and policing. The places we are currently looking at are Gibraltar and Canada. We have checked both for PC vacancies and the procedures, so just need to find an occupation for the meantime.

i believe that recruitment in the Canadian forces is going to slow down over the next few years, so waiting for a spot later may be tough, not impossible mind, but def harder.

Hi Bomber

With experience as a police officer and a degree in law, there will likely be opportunities to work as a legal executive or work in security management, including retail security management.
Additionally there may be opportunities working within advisory services (their sort of CAB type places - I am sure both countries will have something along those lines).
With the law degree and policing experience there could be openings working as a court clerk or stenographer in law courts. Check out whethr those countries have witness supprt service etc as well.
If your OH obtains a teaching qualification such as the Certificate of Education (which can be obtained within 1 year - or less with dedication) or the NVQ, there will be possible openings in police or security training, or teaching law in colleges.
Probation services, prisons, rehab centres, or youth organisations may have some openings too.

Just a few possibilities off the top of my head - all of which will count as valuable experience when the time comes for eligibility to apply for the police.

Thanks for the great advice. :thumbsup: These are alot of jobs to look at! Of course anyone elses ideas are more than welcome, too. Especially for Gibraltar as it is a fair bit smaller and has less jobs available.

Hey again Bomber

I would strongly recommend your OH tries to obtain the teaching qualification as having that together with a degree will open an awful lot of doors for him both here and abroad, especially if he goes for the Cert Ed Post Compulsory Education. I have policing experience with a degree and a Cert Ed and have not been short of offers from various sources.
Also qualifications in life coaching and business coaching are pretty hot and popular at the moment, and can lead to some good openings in other walks of life such as private enterprises- there were home study diploma courses available for free a little while back, so if your OH or you are interested let me know.
If you are happy to say which area of the UK you live in I may be able to point you in the direction of specific colleges to make enquiries with.

I am not too sure if it is worth putting so much effort into a teaching degree as he is till full time employed as a PC. Also we are only looking for this on a temporary base fpr a few years before he can apply to be a PC again. Considering he has done the job already I cannot see why he would have issues becoming a PC again once positions have opened again.

Cert Ed is not a huge effort believe me - I put the papers together in a fortnight and still got a distinction ! It's not a degree, just a further course meaning he can teach adults. This may give openings in police training establishments abroad....a foot in the door. This is a route I know a couple others (ex colleagues) followed for Canada.
The coaching courses are so simple - you fill in a series of workbooks and send them in to be marked - and get a diploma - again lots of doors can open just from this - crazy though it sounds.
My thoughts were that this could offer a lot more chances for the temp employment whilst he waits to become eligible. It is really astonishing how many extra openings become available with a teaching or coaching qualification.

I have been having a look into this however all courses appear to last a year to two not too sure how you did yours in two weeks!

And re: the question above on visas, presumably Gibraltar will be much easier than Canada. If you do go to Canada, which visa will it be on and will it definitely allow him to work?

Signed up for the year, did the required stuff in two weeks and handed it in for marking. A couple of months later the certificate was sent.
With the coaching diploma courses, you can continue with those from outside the UK, because you submit it all online.

Most universities and some colleges will offer the Cert Ed. You will need to check the ones local to you.

The coaching courses were available through Newcastle College of Further Education

Haven't got the links to hand but you should find them on Google.
