Canadian Cops on East Coast
My wife and I are seriously contemplating moving from the UK as we're sick of paying copious amounts in taxes to keep the guests on Jeremy Kyle with roofs over their heads .
Now, the problem we have is that we have a 4-month old baby which isn't such an issue but my wife isn't keen on emigrating too far away just in case she wants to pop back to visit relatives every few months or so. I've explained that with Skype etc, she can see and speak to her family on a daily basis.
What police departments on the east coast (shorted distance to the UK) are recruiting internationally? Likewise, does anyone have any experiences of living and moving into these areas? Similarly what are the average return costs of flights back to the UK and how long does the flight take? I have 6 years' service as a cop in the United Kingdom working in various specialist roles and so I am hoping this may help my chances
Many thanks in advance folks

Re: Canadian Cops on East Coast
Hi,
Basically, no police services within Canada are actively recruiting officers from the UK.
The only potential options you have, without any immigration status in Canada are the Calgary and Edmonton Police Services in Alberta. However, both have just stopped recruiting due to financial contraints.
Calgary will accept a resume emailing to them and they will place it on file, whereas Edmonton will accept an application, but where it will go is anyone's guess as others will tell you here. Edmonton have literally, just closed the door to international applicants albeit it may well re-start as and when the finance is there.
There are plenty of threads on this forum to assist in your research.

Check out flights from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, etc. Usually daily flights in the summer from Halifax, for example, which drops to 3 or 4 a week in the winter. There are not a lot of choices on flights or carriers. I don't know where you would want to go in the UK, but I think you would only be offered Heathrow or Gatwick from there?
We've rarely heard of people joining eastern province police services on this forum I'm afraid. Occasionally we have posts from Ontario and I know someone who recently transferred from Alberta to Ottawa, and another from Alberta to Brandon in Manitoba.
Start googling the city names - some may have their own smaller police services but I do not think they will be actively recruiting outside of Canada - the expression dead man's shoes comes to mind. And other areas will be covered by RCMP which is a no-go unless you are a Canadian citizen at the moment?
A serious consideration might be to invest two or three years somewhere else in Canada with a different police service where you can get in, and then transfer later on, perhaps before your child starts school?
And finally, one blunt piece of advice is not to rely on any of your previously obtained specialist skills from the UK. They will count for nothing here (for 2 or 3 years) with regard to joining or moving onwards in your career. It's only fair that you understand you will stand still for several years while you learn the new systems.

Taxes? Ahem - it's about the same here. We may not pay for Jeremy Kyle guests, but there are plenty of equivalents to keep us going

The details of that agreement are still being finalized in terms of the type and duration of experience that will be recognized, however, a decision has been made to allow members with a minimum of five years of policing experience with any police agency to write the 2010 exam. The exam results for members with less than five years of EPS policing experience will be held in abeyance subject to the final agreement between the parties on what service will be recognized.
Nice one. So it looks like my previous 12 years with Hants will now count for something after all.

Edmonton Police Service have just announced that serving members with previous police experience are now eligible to write this years promotion exam. The results will be held pending a decision made by the association.

Edit - don't forget though, that Calgary and Edmonton are the forward thinking services ... may not be same elsewhere!
