Default Bermuda

Hello all, I was wondering if any current Bermuda Police officers would comment on policing there.

I have read the foums but everything I have foud is from 2004/5.
I'm not interested in the cost of living as I know it is very high, but more important are the working conditions.

I used to know someone who worked as a cop in Bermuda. From what he said i got the impression there was the usual expat versus local divide / problem (apparantly Bermuda is quite racist), but the department itself is not bad. Apparantly its quite well equiped, well paid (paid overtime), and there are barracks there for accomidation if you are single. I can't imagine its a long term option though, i think they have a government policy to boot you off the island after you have been there for a specified number of years so you can't get residency / citizenship.

Hi there, i've just submitted my Bermuda Police application.
In 2000, I served with the UN Police in Kosovo and was friendly with another Brit Police Officer who joined the Bermuda Police but unfortunately I have now lost contact with him. It was the case then that the salary will only cover your living costs but that sounds great to me.

Have you submitted an application??

Hi there,

Could you tell me a bit about the recruitment process??
I have recently submitted my application but don't think interviews will be held until Aug/Sept 08.

What's it truly like over there?

I just did a huge reply to all queries. Tried to post it but it'd timed out. I'm not writing it all out again!

Here’s the condensed version…
Localization/ conversion course is only 4 weeks before you’ll be out on the street. Despite any specialism, you’ll certainly be posted to Hamilton Police Station (the city) on a uniform watch. This station is pretty much falling apart and working conditions aren’t good, but a sparkly new police station is being built and due for completion in the next couple of years.
Shift patterns are ten hours shifts on the 28 rotation cycle with extra payments made for working lates and night shifts. Police pay is a fairly big issue here and the salary advertised in Police Review should jump considerably (we’re in negotiations and expecting a good one).
Medical coverage is one of the best on the island. No NHS here, but we’re covered for everything (and the whole family) including medivac’s to the US.
Lots of work here, but brits don’t seem to last too long here (there’s probably about 40 or so here at the moment). Uniform just tends to deal with domestics and tourist accidents and all crime (even a simple ABH) goes to CID. A major shock for me was that uniform deal with ‘statics’ which is basically acting like a security guard. The premier, the courts & the Governor all require a cop just to be present (a real pain of a duty).
Lots of opportunity for overtime and the service is about 50 down in manpower (you can still say ‘manpower’ here without having to attend a diversity course!). No crappy time & third either.
We still work mainly with Judges Rules but PACE is coming this year. I’d personally be highlighting that experience on any CV.
If successful you’ll be offered a non-renewable 5 year contract (which is usually renewed) although wives will not be allowed to work (immigration rules). Rents are sky high, so a family with children has to be fully supported on one wage. Barrack type accommodation offered only.
For me, the positives outweigh the negatives. Semi tropical island with much lower crime than the UK. A police officers testimony in court still means something and Assault Police still attracts jail time here.
Hope that helps! (hope this posts!)

Hi skids,

Were you a serving UK police officer when you joined the BPS?

If so, what will happen when your time comes to an end on the island in terms of employment?

Regards
Imran
