Default Another Policing Option in Canada

Hi Folks,

I am an ex UK Cop with 10yrs service. I have lived in Canada for just under 3 years. I just wanted to let you all know about another Policing option in Canada. Other than regular Police Services, there are Special Constable Services. Unlike the UK, Special Constable in Ontario at least is a full time paid position. They work in defined areas of jurisdiction, such as Universities, Transit, Courts etc. Also most Police Services employ Special Constables to look after their Custody Areas.

I am employed as a Special Constable at a University. The job is basically very similar to a regular PC, but my beat is a Campus rather than a town. Its pretty decent pay, but a bit less than regular PC's. I have to say I love this job and would not want to work in any other Police Service.

Here are some links to Special Constable Services in Canada.

Those look like fantastic options especially if someone wanted to stay somewhere other than Calgary or Edmonton!

Thanks for that

You are very welcome Source, In addition to the Special Constable Services, some provinces have Sheriff Services. As an example here is the link to the Alberta Sheriff Service

http://www.solgen.gov.ab.ca/sheriffs...h/default.aspx

Again, it could be a good option for Officers looking to do something slightly different.

To add a bit more look at the Ab gov website for Senior investigators or similar, your police background is very sought after, if there is a competition then they pay for experience! They offered me top wack, 72,900 up to 76000 something in Sept! So not bad! Be flexable, where it says 'or related experience' you can make that fit almost anything! Keep looking at the site as it comes up all the time! Best of luck!

I take it for all these positions you have to be a landed resident already?

Maybe something for the missus in there if I'm successful.

just a word of caution. not wishing to be completely negative, but there is a downside.
i recently trained with 2 people who worked as special constables, one for transit, one for the U of A. Both left for several reasons, poorer pay and conditions, lack of career development, opportunity and diversity. It is seen, not by everyone granted, as sort of a PSCO role, for want of a better comparison. Now i am not deriding this position, but i think it needs to be made clear for those considering it, that as i understand it from persons who have done it and left, this is the level of investigation and responsibility you can expect.

there is another side also. i have a friend working for the solicitor general in investigations. he has found, as i have heard from others, there is a definite and overriding division between the ex-cops and civilians working in these depts. you are almost part of a masonic elite, certainly if ex EPS, which means you attract a better salary, working conditions, and job opportunities, and he has 20yrs as CID in the UK.

It does appear therefore, that despite any, and i mean any experience you may bring with you, unless you do your time as a cop over here, you will not be recognized, certainly not with the same gravity.

Actually Alberta Justice takes your previous experience into consideration, and gives you the salary to match! Lots of money!
