Today another record: 39,004 new cases. Though 1,901 were from backlog. Eight labs late, but no estimates can be made of lost cases. Positivity 47.1% from 78.8k tests.

Recoveries: 23,613
These may well be all Omicron mild cases by now.

Deaths 43, 10 RDs

Active: 280,813

Severe 1,472, up 7. Critical 303, down 6

NCR ICU 55%, unchanged. National 48%, up 2%
NCR Ward beds 67.1%
According to Dr John likely to be occupied mainly by patients with comorbidities made worse by Omicron.

The DOH finally confirm what has been obvious for many days.

https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/tops...story/?just_in

At last they admit NCR vaccination is incomplete, but better to have said "at least 30%".

DOH gift set out a few weeks too late!

PhilHealth's version is P6,000!

The PNP warming up to book the unvaccinated:

Seems to suggest you need paperwork even if you are going out for essential services!

Latest ZOE UK list of Omicron symptoms

No information here given out by the DOH. But useful if you develop symptoms, know you haven't been exposed lately (and with Omicron that could be only 2 days ago), but still have lingering doubts. Notice fever is not in the top 5.

Eg I had an airborne allergic attack last week. I had all 5 of those ZOE symptoms but also heavily watering eyes and a slight fever. Although I had had something similar some years ago I had made a quick visit to a fairly empty supermarket 2 days before and you hear of Omicron's high transmissibility. Although I knew it from before and the wind conditions were familiar too it was useful not to see "heavily watering eyes" anywhere in a long ZOE list and that fever was way down.

By the way a specialist doctor I consulted after a previous attack said that elevated areas around Tagaytay gave him the most patients. I never got hay fever in the UK but get something here every 2 or 3 years. One of the little known drawbacks to an otherwise healthy place to live.

Yesterday's NCR total was a little under 1.4k more than Friday's. At 47.2% of national cases.
In the 6 largest cities by population Pasig and Taguig cities stood out each with about 400 more cases.
CLs total was about 750 less but Region 4A's increased by 661.

The two largest Visayan regions reported significantly more cases. WV by about 200 and CV by 239.
Zamboanga, NM. Davao and SOCCSK each had moderate increases over the day before.

In the provinces around the NCR Cavite had nearly 500 less cases. But Laguna added over 500 and Rizal over 600 new cases.

For cities CDO, Cebu, Davao and Iligan cities all showed significant increases.
Cebu City's increased by 132.

Weekly update later.

Today we had 37,154 new cases announced and another 1,421 were held over to join a large backlog of the unannounced. Positivity slightly up at 47.4% from 81.4k tests.

Testing levels not yet up to those seen during the Delta surge late last year. Maybe staff sickness is higher now?

Recoveries: 30.037

Deaths 50, 27 RDs
30 Jan, 1 Nov, 1 Oct
18 back to June 2021

Active: 287,856

Severe 1,475, up 3. Critical 305, up 2

NCR ICU 56%, up 2%. National 49%, up 1%

The unvaccinated:

Serious restrictions and requirements announced in Cavite:

https://www.rappler.com/nation/cavit...sons-covid-19/

But how are they going to know who they are. From those lists?
Are they going to go round house to house? Even in upscale subdivisions?

Last year cases started to rise in early March, peaked in late April, then fell gradually. My car reg was for early May and same thing happened. LTO kept extending and I got it done in August, no penalty. This time If we follow SA it will be only a month or so once we reach the peak for cases to fall sufficiently for govt offices to re-open. For the NCR we may have passed the peak already, the data lags.

It does seem that new cases in the NCR and surrounding areas are starting to fall. NCR cases yesterday were over 2,4k less than the day before at just under 16,000. Cases in CL and 4A were also down, on the day, by 100 and 700 resp.
But the Bicol, MIMAROPA,WV, EV, Davao and Zamboanga regions all reported more cases. Davao added 161 and Zamboanga's doubled to 506.
Cavite's cases increased by 150 but the other provinces around the NCR all had many less.

The six biggest NCR cities all reported fewer cases in the hundreds Manila 1k less than at its peak last week, QC 1.2k less.
In the other cities Baguio added 202 to 648. Davao had 45 more.
Zamboanga City 66 more to 172.

Regional top 10 cases for last week

NCR 121,710
4A 51,673
CL 24,002
WV 6,306
Cag 4,484
Ilocos 4,452
CV 3,654
CAR 3,341
Bicol 3,153
EV 2,070

Note: the DOH are still holding on to around 30,000 unannounced positive cases.

Well if cases are beginning to fall within NCR and it's environs already, this suggests that indeed published figures were massaged for the period leading up to Christmas. "Our World in Data" suggests that this is the case.

Yes, too right!. Or just look at the DOH chart. A good thing about that is it is by estimated date of onset.

For the NCR cases 16-22: Dec 472 23-29 Dec: 6,428

Today 80 odd less cases announced at 37,070. Backlog gave 1,461 cases. Twelve labs were late and if they were not would likely have added about 2k cases.. Positivity 46.0% from 77.4k tests.

Protein based vaccines:

https://news.abs-cbn.com/video/news/...constitutional

Unvaccinated but she says she s waiting for a protein based vaccine. Probably to avoid the very small risks with other types being currently offered. But could just be a clever excuse as...
Last year the Philippines tried to get millions of doses of the protein based Novavax vaccine from the US, but the company has had production problems.

Local observation:

Despite rising case numbers in Cavite sense seems to have prevailed in our area.
Today no roving motorbike announcements, checkpoints with Brgy people or police asking where you are going.
No checks on going into the fresh market.
Although in nearby Tagaytay last week they wanted to see your vacc cert to go into groceries.

Strange that this point was not raised when restricting senior citizens. Oh, I forgot the election season has already begun.

NCR down by nearly 2,500 to 13,543 yesterday. At 36.5% of national cases. Only one city out of the 6 I am tracking, Taguig, showed an increase.
But CL added about 1k and 4A about 700 cases.

Elsewhere significant increases occurred in the CAR, Ilocos, all 3 Visayan regions and NM.
CV added 371 to1,297 and NM 207 to 546 cases.

In the provinces Laguna again stood out increasing on the day by about 1,500.

CDO's cases doubled to 251 and Cebu City added 145 more to 448.

Yesterday saw the usual weekend test reduction. Only 28.5k with 43.4% positivity. This led, with the help of over 6k cases from backlog, to an announcement of 28,471 new cases .Five labs late. The DOH give information that these would have added about 600 cases.

Deaths 34, 4 RDs
33 Jan, 1 July 2020

Numbers only slightly up on a week ago.

NCR ICU 53%, down 5%. National 49%, unchanged.
Ward beds 63% down 3%
Encouraging falls.

NCR numbers fell over 3k to just over 10k.
Some regions reported more cases. Except for Cagayan, with 350 more, they were all in the South:
Caraga, Zamboanga, Davao and SOCCSK.
Davao had 155 more with Davao City 11 more.
GenSan had 10 more.

IloIlo City

I'm not tracking this Visayan city but it should be mentioned:

Sudden turn around after New Year. Dec 30-Jan 5 79, Jan 6-12 860, 13-19 829.

In the Visayas Cebu City reported 52 more to 500.

Chowking lost our business yesterday, we had a couple of fully vaccinated teenagers with us and they wouldn't allow us to dine in so the whole party got up and left. The security guard checked our vaccine certificates on the way in but wouldn't serve us at the counter. We are level 3 but I couldn't see where minors were excluded.

I didn't see any notice at the local Jolibee on minors, but I did at the entrance to Alfamart saying no under 18s or over 65s and referring to an IATF resolution from 2020! It's probably not a Chow King rule but the franchisee's own idea. Last year only one local Palawan for many weeks did not provide pens, especially there being no real world examples of transmission from surfaces. Especially unlikely from a pen!

On the vaccs cert both SM and Robinson's now ask for them here. But this morning I noticed there were very few customers in the SM grocery, which unlike Robinsons' is in "town". I would say half what you would expect midweek. Good in a way as there is normally a long wait at the check out. My wife noticed the same thing last week on a Monday. Which should have been a busy time.

Then that same Palawan was also asking for vacc certs. I would guess they will suffer a bigger loss of business than SM.

What good will it do? The probably poorer people not able to shop will be forced to more expensively buy in smaller shops. Where it is less safe! In our area vaccine supply was more limited than in the NCR last year and some probably gave up waiting. Probably in Cavite overall 50% at the most fully and 40% in Upper Cavite. Those, like us, with their own transport could avail of vaccines from two neighboring areas. But Cavite has been included with the NCR at Alert Level 3 and the vaccine policy is only for 3 and above.
