The latest on the virus variant, with the upper limit for UK R at a scary 1.7. Scientist says in this respect there is a "huge difference" between the new variant and the existing one.
Also some going back on the effect on age groups. Now it may just effect all very much the same.

Here, the country's leader now adding the US to the 20 countries arrivals deserving a 2 week holiday in Clark. Despite earlier saying they were not included.. The list will soon be expanded and those arrivals exempt will only come from countries with no or non publicized genome testing.

City of Manila residents returning from the provinces going home need a swab test. Another article says they cannot return to their home until they are shown negative. You will stay at a facility near to your barangay until result comes. There are 897! This only recently announced. Something that will be copied elsewhere if things worsen?

The country's leader says that those in classes A, B and C can afford to buy their own. I reckon that many have gone down a class during the pandemic when their businesses were closed for many months. True recovery is some way off. for many sectors. The middle class is relatively small and fragile here.

No report tomorrow. Should resume the next day.

Cases announced on January 5 : 937. 865 positives found out of 16.7k tests, so a rate of 5.2%

Deaths 58 with 4 RDs.

Locations for January 4 cases were:

Top 15 only:

For January 6 1,047 cases. Positivity rate of 23.6k tests was 6.2, large backlog. Only 20k tests coming along.

Deaths at 26 with 13 RDs.
Critical at 1,361, up 3 from 2 days ago.

More detail for January 5 cases:

Top 15 only:

Prosperidad in Agusan, Oroquieta Misamis Occidental..both on Mindanao.

For the last two days a continuation of low testing following the holidays. Maybe the holidays have been longer for some this year as businesses are not operating fully, so no need to rush back? Then anyone who went away showing symptoms might delay presenting?

NCR generally dominating less with 23.5% of cases over the two days. Leading to a large variety of locations showing.
Positivity keeping above 5%. for both days.
A truer picture will only emerge in a week's time.

CDO city unusually featuring:

CDO was on a good downward trend, but now a small uptick.

Deaths high at 84 over the two days , although 17 were RDs.

On the "UK " variant front the Philippines adding 6 more countries to its arrival ban, but no names yet. They say they are finding it difficult to get official responses from other countries!
Genome testing here has drawn a blank with 305 samples tested from recent UK arrivals. Now a Filipina has turned up in Hong Kong with it after staying in Cagayan after arriving from the UK.

A well known doctor,(actually a heart specialist!) has popped up with this frightening claim on the tv:

https://news.abs-cbn.com/video/spotl...-cases-15-fold

Certain people here get a lot of air time if they tow the government line. Often they are not specialist doctors in infectious diseases....sometimes not even medical doctors. I watched a forum on this variant which the President attended. A few expert doctors calmly told him the variant was not a surprise and should just be monitored. None of the three I heard speak recommended extreme measures like banning arrivals from countries.

More strange ideas on keeping the public safe in a Tagaytay. On entering the Ayala mall here you are issued with a "customer time card", actually a small piece of paper saying you are only allowed 1 hour and 30 minutes inside the mall, which by the way is mainly open to the outside air. "Kindly surrender on exit".it says. No collection on exit.

Yesterday 1,353 cases. Positivity 5.2%. from 19.1k tests. Backlog of nearly 400 going through. Three labs not reporting....but how many still closed?
A much increased 27k tests in process on January 6.

Marikina an unusually high number.

Marikina with slight recent increase.

Deaths 9 with 3RDs.
Critical 1,373...up again, adding 12.

More detail on January 6:

Other Mindanao 28

CDO City in again after 2 days featuring at 3rd. Cebu City has been slowly adding more cases recently.

The NCR has 8 cities in the top 20 and makes up 26.1% of total cases.
Together with Region 4A and Davao the 3 areas give over half of national cases.

Flight banning news...the government has noted China had a "UK" variant case a week ago, but it is still waiting for official confirmation before deciding on whether to ban its arrivals!

I assume the China case is the filipina in Hong Kong that flew out of CDO.

New strain now found in Nigeria, no details yet.

WHO are trying to get access to tbe Wuhan lab. Apparently they specialised in Covid type viruses and is about 16 km from the wet market where covid 19 supposedly originated from. It appears that lab is part jointly financed by the USA.

No, the China case was reported at New Year.

variant

A case of the SA variant also reported there earlier this week.

Re the Filipina the DOH secretary here said the Filipina could have got it in Hong Kong. She spent time in Cagayan. He would say that wouldn't he?

The WHO China investigation won't get anywhere. They'll cover up the cover up and the WHO need them in the organization. They've announced over 200 new cases so far this year. But recent research suggests Wuhan cases and deaths were many times higher than the official figures. They're not going to change hiding the true picture and few there are willing to risk prison for telling the truth.

Announced today nearly 2k cases, 7 labs not reporting. Highest for 3 weeks. Includes a backlog of nearly 800 though. Positivity down to 4.4% from a higher 26.3k tests. In process 27.5k tests.

Top 5 locations:

Davao City surging.

Deaths 34 with 3RDs.

Critical at 1,366, up 7.

Plus 40 other Mindanao, Bicol 19.

Plus Caloocan 23, Paranaque 20.

Ten of the 17 NCR cities in top 20 urban areas.

The Philippines drops a place in world ranking, overtaken by Sweden. Looks possible we will soon also be overtaken by Israel and Switzerland, especially the latter country as it is showing daily new cases three times that announced here.

The UK:

Estimated figures of I in 50 in England infected, I in 30 in London with the worst boroughs at 1 in 15. But the most accurate indicator of the bad situation there being that the number of hospital patients in the UK with covid is now nearly 50% greater than at the first peak back in the late spring. If the situation also deteriorates here It will not be so easy to tell as many do not make it to hospital and the system is more of a public/private mix. More unreliable case data will have to be relied upon.

As vaccinations start to take traction in Europe those countries will start to drop down the tables. Israel is the leader so far with approaching 20% of the population vaccinated. The UK is hoping to reach 2 million a week by the end of next week. Vaccinations in the USA appear to be lagging badly. Trump said they would reach 20 million by the end of the year but in reality have only reached just under 7 million.

Dr Sanjay Gupta on CNN, an acknowledged media expert on covid, says that vaccinations will not cut transmission at the rate of protection given for the vaccine, somewhat less. And if the groups vaccinated first are the elderly, nurses etc those people are not the ones spreading infection so much. The vulnerable should be first of course but then other countries in Europe may well follow Britain in giving one dose more widely at first to have a greater effect on transmission.

It has been inferred that President Biden will likely go the single shot route when he takes over.
