Scot47. The experiences as described on this thread are by no means typical. Yes some have had a torrid time but one has to ask, how long was the courtship phase before they "permanently" hooked up, and are the "victims" whiter than white?

Business forecasters try to find "leading indicators" to forecast economic downturns. We don't have past data to work on. But from P11s thread and our own experiences can we suggest any?

I recall reading about CBs facebook jewelry business and thinking at the time I wouldn't be happy about it if I lived with her. As they showed someone who could think of and engage in complicated financial schemes and who could therefore apply those skills in nefarious ways to our finances. Which is what she later tried on a number of occasions.

Early Leading indicators:

2. 30 years younger
3. Previous job was housemaid in the Gulf or bar girl
4. Family still alive
5. Tantrums played out on social media

Later stage forward indicators:
1. Knife attacks
2. Killing puppies
3. Attempted suicide / hospitalizations for broken heart or hormone issues

You forgot bigamy, the hidden kids, and constant lies over finances.

Wasn't it Benny Hill who said, "Why buy a book when there's a thriving lending library in the town?"
Relating the same to Phil11, despite repeated multiple warnings from forum members, not only did he 'buy a book', he ended up paying a king's ransom for it, which turned out to be an utter fake.

As for those thinking of settling in Asia and finding a new partner that is 30 years younger, reminds me that we haven't heard back recently from Bobsnoturuncle or Lucky91. Not really surprising, if they've been reading this sad tale, it's not so much as getting cold feet but suffering from severe frost-bite.

P11 wasn't looking for a first edition but as many are, was happy with a previously read book.

I once saw Benny Hill in an upstairs Patpong bar, careering around and amusing the gals - about 35 years ago, I think.

Anyway. the point about having a GF 30 years your junior is very true, too much baggage... much better to go for someone forty years your junior without kids and preferably without any internet skills.

PI isn't the only place you can live a reasonable life on not a lot of money, but Covid may lock things in for the moment - no reason to put up with a damp British bedsit.

The ex-GF is trying to gain face and leave the OP with none.

When I have any IT problems I get my 17 year old niece to fix it.

It's a very high risk affair, but there are a lot of successful marriages too. It would be interesting to know how the risks stack up against say Thai, Vietnamese, mainland Chinese and other SE Asian brides.

I would guess that the closer the age, education, socio-economic status, the higher the language skills in both languages, the more longevity. There are always exceptions though. Don't have to tick all those boxes but it may help to tick some.

High language skills is not always an advantage, I speak 4 languages and my wife speaks three and she spent 27 years in the UK but I still don't always understand her as she speaks Aberdonian most of the time.

My father worked in Manila for ten years and quite a few Expats he knew married local women. Just casual observation but most such marriages or long term relationships worked out well (as long as they stayed in the Philippines) - but as Expats they generally understood how different the culture was, spoke to other Expats, and tended to marry women from the lower middle class.

In this case many people on the thread, usually with more experience than Phil with the country, gave advice and pointed out early on the train wreck that would happen and Phil stubbornly rejected most advice. Though I really sympathize with what he gone through, and from his own description his living conditions, a bit of common sense goes a long way

The same sort of issues I have noticed in other third world countries with Expats paying less attention than they would at home.

Explain to me what I should have done differently. If I had listened to some advice here I would have no chance against the cases against me.....or in the UK ....looking out of a bedsit on a cold November evening thinking "what if"

I personally believe that if you'd listened to most of the advice you were given from practically day one, you'd have moved out there and simply had a lovely life, met ladies, had fun and all would be grand. However you didn't because we're all strangers and why would you listen to strangers, and you wanted what you wanted and you got it.
