I am in receipt of my first payment of military pension, but they sent a cheque (in GBP). A quick visit to the bank by the wife revealed they do not accept GBP cheques only USD. Anybody had this problem and if so how did you resolve.

Send it back to the UK, if you still have a UK bank account. Or ask the originator to cancel the cheque and remit proceeds direct in pesos to your account here.
