Such a contrast to Hungary in 1956 when Embassy staff scraped up (almost literally) every British ex pat in Budapest & escorted them, under the guns of Soviet tanks, to safety.

As an individual you will likely get limited help if you have been a naughty boy etc. As a group in a national emergency they will rally around and do as much as they can like repatriation etc.

Maybe, but in the context of Stacey123 original post, the Embassy are unlikely to be much help. Much better, developing a strong social network on the ground, hopefully some with good connections.
