The mood has changed here, most of the locals I know have said if my wife and I leave can they come with us.
I know a few Americans who have or are in the process of leaving and one who has closed his company and sold all the assets so he is ready for a quick exit if need be.

If you are worried, don't be ( I think ). But if you are worried then main rules are keep your head down and agree with everyone and don't voice an opinion, if it goes wrong blame it on 'lost in translation'. Just because there is a nutter at the wheel it does not mean all the passengers are.

I would expect if Duterte wishes to separate from USA, he will be asking China for help next time a typhoon or earthquake strikes.

We are concerned, purely because he is unpredictable.
We keep a low profile, all financial commitments made here are fully up to date, so we do not have any issues that could be used as leverage

I am not concerned and indeed I have seen no change in attitude to the foreigners here. Always warm and friendly toward me. Even if I was American, I wouldn't be concerned and see no reason to be. Guess those concerned can wear Duterte wristbands, hats and T shirts.

...."separate from the USA".........? The Philippines lost its colonial status and gained independence some time ago. Surely the big change came when the US closed down its military bases in the Philippines ?

Not concerned to be honest, most of the press stuff is heavily manipulated by the opposition, you cant believe a single word of what's written with anything regarding Duterte. As a Brit for me nothing has changed with regard to foreigners but I can only speak as I find in my area which is Cebu.
This guy offers hope to a nation that has been mislead and abused by its own politicians for decades, he only has 6 years to initiate a change that will take 10-20-30 yrs to embed in the culture. He has the support of almost all Filipinos so hopefully he will deliver, getting rid of the Abu Sayaf...BY ANY MEANS...would be a great start!!
In my house Duterte is akin to a god and I cannot say anything against him...even if I wanted too.

I think what is a bit more worrying, especially for those in big cities, is the supposed change in focus of some drug dealers from dealing drugs to 'kidnapping for ransom'.

I was in Iran in during the 1979 revolution, in Egypt in 81 when they shot Sadat 100m from my flat, in South America in 82 when UK beat the Argentinians then got deported, got caught up in the Oman/Yemen border skirmishes in 83 and then arrived in Qatar in 90 just 2 weeks before the Gulf war kicked off so he does not particularly worry me but my missus keeps hinting that we should go back to the UK to live.

Yeh, there were more than a few work colleagues who refused to work in the same country as me. I even arrived in Jakarta once for a meeting 4 hours before the Marriott hotel I was supposed to be staying in got blown up. I can't understand why my work colleagues were nervous traveling with me.

I bet the ASEAN heads of state will hope there will not be liver on the menu during their stay in the Philippines.

And the sad truth is, China would have the actual money to help, unlike the USA, which is essentially running on vapour at the moment.
