Is this right
 

I have have been reading through two highly recommended removal companies "Terms and Conditions" both of them state they do not do the paperwork for export and import of your goods, or an inventory, that is up to you to do it, or pay them I suppose extra to do it, they both state that they will not ship any of the following, mobile telephones, portable media, computing devices and trinkets, not sure what they class as a trinket.

The other items that they state they will not ship I can understand, but not mobile telephones, portable media, computing devices and trinkets.


They both quote for packing and unpacking of goods, but the list of extra expenses is long.

It was not until I was bored one rainy day that I decided to read the small print, and was quite amazed at it all.

Hope someone can tell me why they will not ship mobile telephones, portable media, computing devices and trinkets.

Hi Susan, sorry for the delay in responding, i've been away but hope this isn't too late to help.

Ask them a few more questions about the paperwork, whilst some of it is your legal responsibility to complete (as it's your declaration) most moving companies would help you do this either by completing on your behalf where they can (like most of the shipping documents e.g. Bill of Lading) or partially completing or guiding you where it has to be done by you (e.g. insurance forms or customs declarations). If the removal company is doing the packing and loading i'd expect them to do the inventory, but I guess they wouldn't if you were using a self pack/self load service?

Most of the terms and conditions are standard and set to cover a range of move situations, so are usually in force unless stated otherwise, so if there is something they've told you they will do that's contrary to their terms (i.e. inventory and paperwork) then just ask them to put in writing that this is covered within your price.

In terms of the items not to be shipped...these are exclusions in the recommended BAR terms and conditions and I am assuming are excluded because of an assessed higher risk than standard items, so possibly due to higher value or risk of damage from change in atmospheric conditions (electricals).

Are you going to the UAE or Saudi by any chance?

Some Muslim countries are suspicious of anything that may depict a God like figure, so trinkets, amulets, statues etc are just discouraged altogether by shipping companies - because even if they are fine it makes the shipment more likely to get searched by customs.

I'm guessing the mobile phones, portable media and computers is because they could contain adult images that would be banned in those countries. In any case those items are not large. Just take them on the plane in your carry on luggage.
