Container sizes

Hi everyone,

How do the shipping companies know if a 20ft or a 40ft container loaded on a truck will be able to navigate the roads where you live .

I guess when they come to do a final survey of your goods in Turkey, they will be able to tell if there is a problem or not.

Do the UK side of the shipping company check to see if the roads are suitable to access your property for delivery.

What happens if they say there is not enough room to bring it your home.

hi Susan,

This is a really good question.

Typically you will be asked if there are any access issues at your property including any restrictions with the roads (e.g. low bridges, narrow lanes, bridges with weight limits). If there is something you're concerned about then just highlight it and the removal company can look into it. Sometimes we will get an access check done by physically going out and looking (and like you said if they are coming to do a survey they will do this then), other times tools like google earth allow us to make a remote check.

If there isn't enough room to bring it to your home there are a few options. They can either use a smaller shuttle vehicle and park nearby, move things from the container into the shuttle vehicle and then deliver in a few runs to your new house. Alternatively (as sometimes there isn't enough time to do this without incurring additional charges from the shipping line) sometimes we have the container delivered to our warehouse and move everything onto a smaller vehicle(s) here and then bring it to your home.

Either way as long as we know in advance about access issues Removals Company's can usually find a solution, just make sure to share any concerns early as this may have an affect on your quote and you'll usually find costs for shuttle vehicles or difficult access are excluded unless stated otherwise so you don't want any nasty surprises last minute!

Hope that helps!

Hi kirstyp,

Sorry for not thanking you sooner for all this information, you sure are a big help.

I now think I have got most things covered, will get in touch with Bournes International Moves again and arrange a survey, so at least I will know what I can take and what is being left behind, the house is going on the market this week, so keeping my fingers crossed that it will sell quite quickly, and will then be able to state a moving back to the UK date. xxx
