Default Four years since we bought our house

This week!!!! Time flies especially as you get older

We bought this home after being in NZ for just 6 weeks, as we had to home our three dogs. We bought it without doing significant surveys as it was pretty new and "seemed OK to us" - after 11000 earthquakes I doubt that we'll ever have that attitude again

House wise since then -
  • we have had EQC repairers all over it plastering, painting etc
  • had cracked foundations
  • lost some of our mains water supply and then been presented with a bill for same as EQC lost our records
  • rescued 2.5 acres of overgrown garden into a garden to be quite pleased with - after 2-3 years of planning, a pic of our front rose garden is attached, taken this week
  • changed all the carpets - why DO kiwis use the same colours in every room???!!
  • re-did two bathrooms totally
  • argued with the bathroom builders for the next year over 1% of the bill as he lied and claimed time for more builders than actually turned up....
  • learnt that cheap ride on mowers are not really any good for 2.5 acres
  • learnt about fitting electric fencing
  • learnt about native plants and trees in our garden
  • watch the dogs chase numerous rabbits in the garden but never catch one
  • discover our staffie has a penchant for hedgehogs (yuk)

Basically - encountered domestic "first world" issues that we were never exposed to and I have loved every minute

Except the earthquakes perhaps.....

They put the same colour carpet in each room to make the house look bigger. I was advised to do this by a kiwi.

In the two and a bit years we've been in our house we have paid to have:

One central heating system installed which is heat pumps on a timer but the end result is the same.
Replacement double glazed windows and doors
Underfloor insulation
Another layer of Pink Batts in the loft
Replaced both toilets, one upstairs, one downstairs
Installed a bath where the shower cubicle was but kept the shower unit over the bath
a new gas cooker with electric oven installed
replaced the louvres in two doors with flat panels as this was cheaper than replacing the whole doors
two sets of bi-fold doors in the kitchen
replacement of the missing bedroom door (what the hell is it with kiwis and no internal doors ? It makes it about as cosy as a wind tunnel)
an electrician took the ugly chandeliers down from the lounge ceiling and replaced them with normal light fittings, and also replaced the kitchen ceiling lights and the wall lights in the lounge
replaced all the old tatty electrical sockets with new double sockets and replaced the old light switches with new ones.
Put a new wooden fence along the front of our property
put a concrete mowing strip put at the bottom of our garden as well as hard standing for green waste (it was bigger than I'd anticipated however, the 'rear patio' looks good now it's summer !)
A bit more concrete by the garage just to 'square off' the flower bed
Brought the garden back to life, whilst it wasn't overgrown, it needed a shake up

We've done the redecorating ourselves, we'll complete that next year. I also replaced all the handles on the kitchen cabinets as part of the redecorating/facelift of the kitchen

In the future we plan to:

Replace the carpet in the lounge/diner 'cause we can't really afford to re-carpet all the floors of our house. Replace the lino in the kitchen and bathrooms.

Then, apart from that, hopefully it will just be routine repairs and maintenance. We will have done what I wanted to do; overhaul our property from the front garden to the back garden and from the top to the bottom of the house.

We have just bought a house, went looking for a new house with everything done, but bought a 1970 that needs EVERYTHING done, it has no heating, no double glazing, threadbare carpets and very 1970s bathrooms and carpets.
But it's in a great up and coming area, has a great garden and lots of great views, this is one of them......

Is that Porirua Harbour ? Lovely to look at on a Summer's day.

Oh, and don't worry about all the work and expense of doing your house up. It'll only take a few years !

Well done you guys! Looks really fantastic, love the garden! Sounds as if you have had a real rollercoaster with the house, but for sure it feels like home now.

Great post Jan n Neil,

I think you kind of have my dream (apart from the earthquakes)... land to create a beautiful garden. I want to grow veggies as well, and have dogs... all the things we can't afford to do in the UK (well not down south anyway!) . Can't believe u have hedgehogs... I am assuming they're introduced. Where do you live btw?
