Hi all, can't seem to get the info I need from the forums out there. It seems in order to take advantage of the higher S'pore wages and lower Malaysian cost of living as a UK citizen I must be either a permanent resident in Malaysia, or have MM2H visa...
Is there not any other way?
As I would like to live in Malaysia I would happily live and work in KL, and from there look to move in future to Johor and work over the border in Singapore - but it's 5 years to get a PR. Can one not get the required work visa in Malaysia, and in future change jobs to Singapore without affecting that Malaysian visa?
Or even a case where in future I am working in both countries, but live in Malaysia?
have seen plenty about getting an EP in SGD first then getting a MACS to cross the border, is this enough? Surely a visa will be required, not to mention lots of issues with MACS now?
Please help!

Correct, all other visa types are for limited times (except family/married social visa).
"As I would like to live in Malaysia I would happily live and work in KL, and from there look to move in future to Johor and work over the border in Singapore - but it's 5 years to get a PR." Minimum, and there are other requirements.

No, you cannot even change jobs in Malaysia without reapplying. You could do this on an MM2H visa, though. You can work outside the country (but not inside) provided you can meet the financial requirements. One issue in transferring from an Employment Visa to an MM2H. Your funds as proof of sufficient funds must be in a foreign deposit, so shifting your funds to a non-Malaysian branch is critical. As well, your money for the Fixed Deposit must also be external to Malaysia. So money you earn in Malaysia (on that work visa) must be moved abroad and then brought back in.
