Default Question to everyone who went on 457 visa...

Hi everyone!

Just wondering who all you 457' ers flew with when emigrating? I'm trying to work out which airline to choose based on luggage allowance/ cost and that.

I know a friend of mine got extra baggage allowance for a perm' visa, did anyone get extra allowance for a temp stay visa? Also trying to work out how much extra it would cost to take extra baggage, I just had a look on emirates website and it quotes £1050 for an extra bag of 30kg

I had no idea extra baggage was that much!? haha

Cheers Lucy

hiya,
not got to that stage yet, but i think over the years ive been on this site its only a few airlines that offered the extra baggage allowance for migrants ... and dont recall anyone being offered it recently. think it was singapore airlines that offered migrant fares, but like i said i dont recall anyone recently having them.
you can ship small boxes of stuff - if you go on the websites of the more popular international movers,a couple of them have guides on how much fits in what size box, and how much it would cost to ship them - definately cheaper than taking as excess baggage!
try searching the whole forum for migrant fares, or put a post up in the main immigration forum - those going on a 457 who arent nurses are probably around more and might be able to give you some advice.

We came over on a 457 with Emirates airline 2 years ago and got nothing extra 20Kgs for each passenger.
Fortunately we had taken family with us to see us off at the airport and they were able to take away one full suitcase that would have cost us 500 pounds to take.
If you are planning to send your things by relocation then pack as much into the container as you possibly can. The suitcase that we left behind had bed linen, towels etc. In the end we just had to buy more.

Thanks for replys guys!

I never thought of posting on main forum Sue, thanks for that. Just used to staying on the nursing bit. Ta very much.

Hey cheekymoo, only 20kg eh!? Rubbish isn't it, the same as you would get for a holiday as emigrating

I think this is how its going to be now too, can't imagine getting all clothes and shoes into one case of 20kg We're not even taking anything else with us, just clothes and shoes. Looks like we'll have to take what we want to wear straight away and ship the rest.

Thanks again though guys Lucy.

Lucy

Do you have any idea who you are going to ship your belongings with? Like us, you dont sound like you intend to take too much with you.

Lulubell,

a lot of people that leave from South Africa use a company called U-bags who specialise in smaller shipments.I believe they drop off the boxes with you then fetch them once you have filled them and ready for the off.Just checked their website and they are internationally affilliated!

http://www.u-bag.com/

Saffers also tend to use IOM for one way flights and guaranteed extra baggage allowance. Also and international organisation so worth a try!

http://www.iom.int/jahia/jsp/index.jsp

Good luck.

Just had a thought - I think you get a more generous baggage allowance if you go first/business class; might be worth working out if it would be cheaper to go a better class than shipping stuff - im sure you get somehting like 35-40kg with some airlines in first class.

Consider flying via the US with one of the big American airlines - many let you have 2 x 23kg per person - such as United http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6867,52482,00.html

I just a quick 'google' and see that Emirates have increased baggage allowance from 20kg to 30kg for standard class passengers as of May, which is good. Thought I would pop this in incase you hadnt heard..

Hi Danielle! Actually i didn't notice that, even though i'd been on the website Thanks very much. Its not clear whether the 30kg is plus the 7kg hand luggage though, or whether its 30kg including the hand and checked in baggage. Will have to ring them maybe. Ta very much

Hi Karen,

I'm not too sure really to be honest.

You're right, i'm not taking much at all i was hoping to take to large'ish suitcases (just clothes and shoes), 1 free with flight allowance and pay for one as excess both on the flight (as i just thought it would be easier). But it looks like flying it over as excess baggage is much more than i thought it would be

The main one i was looking at for shipping was excess baggage.com, they seem reasonable. But i need to have a good look at all the other suggestions from all you kind people on B.E! Thanks so much again guys,

Lucy

Im flying back for a visit to the UK, flying via america with Air New Zealand to San Fran then Virgin Atlantic to London.

Since Im flying via the US i get 46kg weight allowance. Cost about 1900AUD. Might be worth the little extra for the increased weight limit.
