Midwifery training...

Im going to Aus in 18 months on a 136 im a qualified nurse currently working in A&E, ive just started a new job and its like working on a medical ward im still in A&E but miss my old department as we had a lot of trauma.

Theres a 18 month grad programme starting for a Bsc midwifery that im thinking of doing, im just after a bit of advice from people who may have done it.

Whats it like being a student again?
Is there much call for midwives in Aus?
How do you rate midwifery compared to nursing?

Re: Midwifery training...

If you are thinking of midwifery training do it in the UK - Australian midwifery training is not recognised in the UK as it does not have enough clinical experience so if you went back to the UK you wouldnt be able to use it unless you did an adaptation programme
There is a massive shortage of midwives here as there is in the UK the difference here is they are still employing midwives. Most maternity units are employing nurses on postnatal wards to work under the supervision of midwives as there are not enough midwives in the system
re the difference between the two
In my opinion they are 2 entirely different professions with different philosophies and practice bases and its not worth doing the training and putting in all the hard work and effort if it isnt something you are really interested in and want to do
try looking on the Royal college of midwives website and the NMC website for more career info
good luck with your decision
best wishes Mary
