Do English-speaking/trained inurses still need IELTS?

as from yesterday, english trained nurses who completed thier secondary school training in english no longer need to do the ietls test!!!
this is only for registration with AHPRA.

Excellent news for anyone struggling ... crap if you have already paid out for it ...

full details are on the FAQ info, click on ''english language skills explanatory notes and frequently asked questions''

http://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov...ct-Sheets.aspx

... ''Applicants who have completed their secondary education as well as a nursing or midwifery program, taught and assessed in English. If an applicant is able to provide sufficient evidence that they have completed:  their secondary education taught and assessed in English to the requisite level required for entry into a nursing or midwifery program AND  a nursing or midwifery program taught and assessed in English then the applicant is not required to undertake a test of English language proficiency for registration purposes. However on application for registration, applicants are required to provide documentary evidence of their completed secondary education as well as the completed nursing or midwifery program. Evidence that both were taught and assessed in English is also required as well as evidence of the requisite level required for entry into the nursing or midwifery program. Evidence of secondary education may include documentation that states the name and location of the secondary education provider, the years in which an applicant undertook their secondary education at this location, and the final year of secondary education completed. Evidence may include but is not limited to a school leaving certificate or a Year 12 certificate. Evidence of the requisite level for entry into a nursing or midwifery program may include information from the course handbook detailing the entry requirements of the education provider. In circumstances where an applicant is unable to provide the necessary documentary evidence of their secondary education, a statutory declaration must be provided stating the name and location of the education provider and the final level of secondary education achieved.''

On another site (today) an emigration agent has stated that this is not the case, this is only for students who qualified in Australia. So us lot coming from overseas will still have to take the dreaded test.

Excellent news, common sense prevails :)

Now bear with me on this one,and if I'm wrong, please correct me!!!

A nurse who did all their schooling in English and all their nursing training in English.
Registered with QNC/ANMC and now AHPRA since 2008.
Currently applying for 457 but because he's already registered he doesn't need to do IELTS - especially after today - correct?? So he can just submit his registration details?
Will later be applying for ENS, and we've been told he'll need to do IELTS for that, even though he is already registered in Aus, because its an IELTS requirement for a PR visa itself, rather than for AHPRA. Is that correct? Will he have to submit IELTS test results as a DIAC requirement even if they aren't needed by AHPRA, or is the fact that AHPRA have scrapped the requirement in his case sufficient proof of Englsih ability?

confused? I am!!! Any help appreciated from those of you more familiar with the nursing maze!!:fingerscrossed:

As I read the FAQ it doesn't indicate at all that only applicable for students qualifying in Australia, just states that if your secondary schooling and nurse training was completed in English as long as you provide adequate evidence then you are exempt, if there are any queries with the evidence provided then you have to sit the exam

That was certainly the case last week, but the new fact sheet is dated the 17th August. This is the first time I've seen it mentioned, so I guess your agent may not be aware of it yet.

It's a bit like getting a PR Visa though once you're here you don't need to do the thing you applied to do...lol

Not sure if this is the fact sheet you've already got

http://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov...gkNh1RyA%3d%3d

and

Outline of English Language Skills Standard

Internationally qualified applicants who did not complete their secondary education in English must demonstrate that they have the necessary English language skills for registration purposes. For specific requirements for the Nursing and Midwifery professions refer to Nursing and Midwifery Frequently Asked Questions English Language Skills (185 KB,PDF).

This requires:
a minimum score of 7 in each component of the IELTS academic module, OET or specified alternatives, with the exception of Pharmacy, which requires a minimum score of 7.5
test results to be obtained within two years prior to registration application.
Exemptions

National Boards (with the exception of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia) may grant an exemption from the requirements where the applicant provides evidence that they:
completed secondary education that was taught and assessed in English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States of America and
hold tertiary qualifications in the relevant professional discipline that was taught and assessed in English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States of America.

Mmm, but thereby hangs the question - he's already registered with AHPRA, from before the IELTS requirement came in, so registered without needing to do it. So as that registration is still current, reading all the AHPRA stuff he needn't do it as far as they are concerned.

However, we know people who have been on 457s, then applied for PR, and DIAC have requested that they do IELTS - even though they are already/currently registered - so it seems there's a DIAC requirement for IELTS, even for those born/educated/trained in UK/Ireland. See the problem?

Polly, you are saying the requirement for IELTS is coming from DIAC & surely would still be required even though the nursing reg no longer requires it. Not sure why it would be needed going from 457 to PR though:confused: I know lots of people do it for PR visas as they need the points but I didn't think the points thing applied in this case.

Thats what I can't really understand to be honest - I can't see why it would be needed going 457 to PR, having ploughed through all the stuff on both DIAC and AHPRA at least 3 times! Confirmation is good though - I'm just trying to unravel all the info and find out what's accurate, and I thought I might be missing something as other nurses have said they've been asked for IELTS just at the PR stage.....maybe I'm not.

Could well come down to it being a points thing, and that won't apply here so I'm starting to think that he might be worrying unnecessarily :fingerscrossed:
As with all the visa stuff on here its a question of asking the right question to get a clear answer!

Is BB coming back on the 457 initially? If so, I wouldn't stress too much about requirements for PR at this stage as it may well have changed by the time he is doing it!

Oh I know, the way they change stuff nothing's certain, but hopefully it won't be too many months before the PR application goes in :fingerscrossed:

Re: English nurses no longer need ielts for aus!!

im still confused ... my friend has a job in Vic to start asap, and it was his manager over there who told him that he didnt need the ielts (currently the only thing holding up his reg). he queried it with her, she phoned ahpra who said no he didnt need it, just needed to prove his education/training ... but he emailed ahpra and they replied that yes he did.

so who knows whats happening ... certainly not the ahpra!!!!
