Biomedical Scientist in USA

Hi, I moved to the US 4 years ago. Back in the UK I was a HCPC registered biomedical scientist. Long story, but I have been working in a different field since I moved here and now I want to go back to work in a hospital lab. I think the equivalent job over here would be an MLT/MLS?

I've started looking into getting licensed and it looks like I need to go through the ASCP and take an exam. Looking at the requirements, it seems like my degree will be ok because it was an accredited undergraduate Masters, and I have the required clinical experience in haematology, blood bank and biochemistry, but it looks like to qualify for anything you also need microbiology experience. Beyond the required one week micro placement to complete my degree, I haven't done anything, in fact I only studied microbiology and histology for the first couple of years; everything else was geared towards blood sciences.

Obviously I'm expecting to have to do a bit of voluntary work to update my skills since I've been out so long, which is fine, but just wondering if anyone has done anything similar or can give me some pointers? I'm so confused and I don't want to approach any potential employers whilst being totally clueless.

Thanks!
