any one got any helpful ideas ?
I applied for my UK registration being a registered nurse here in Australia with a Ba Nursing and have worked in every area except midwifery. Am British born and UK passport holder. Anyway my registration was knocked back with the following reason stated that I needed "exposure to maternity". Phoned the NMC and explained I would not be working in that area and was told that under the new EU rules I have to have it........Has delayed our going back as my Registration was our safety net job wise while hubby was looking for work. The NMC could not tell me how many hours I would need to do as they did not know......So am bit lost now on what to do...do not want to do another year of Uni if I can help it.......Any ideas anyone on how many hours I would need to do ???

Re: any one got any helpful ideas ?
i looked for my own transcript of nurse training and couldn't find it !!! (hidden in the darkest depths of the garage probably)
ANyway had a look on the UK's NMC website, found this link:
http://www.nmc-uk.org/aFrameDisplay....ocumentID=4650
It states that study should consist of :
A. Theoretical study
(a) Nursing
Nature and ethics of the profession,
General principles of health and nursing,
Theoretical nursing principles in relation to:
• general and specialist medicine
• general and specialist surgery
• child care and paediatrics
• maternity care
• mental health and psychiatry
• elderly care/geriatrics
• home/community nursing
(b) Basic sciences (c) Social sciences
B. Clinical instruction
Nursing in relation to:
• general and specialist medicine
• general and specialist surgery
• child care and paediatrics
• maternity care
• mental health and psychiatry
• elderly care/geriatrics
• home/community nursing
The PDF doesnt stipulate how many hours are required for each subject (at least i can't find it) You could email the NMC and ask them directly what their specifications are?
Nurse training in the UK covers all specialities: both theory and practice, including mids and paeds,
Sorry i dont have answers but hope this might help a little
Best of Luck

Re: any one got any helpful ideas ?
Difference being if you trained in the UK then it is recognised by the NMC. If trained outside of the UK then you have to meet their requirements and if they want midwifery then it needs doing.
To OP I did conversion in UK from EN to RN and I had to do I think it was 150 hours both theory and practical in midwifery just for an idea

Re: any one got any helpful ideas ?
Thanks for that everyone...I did contact the NMC but they were unable to give me the amount o time I needed...so info from silverdragon was useful thanks for that.
Seems it is only in the last year that this ruling has come in as friends that got UK registration last year did not need so much.....
Thanks everyone for your replies.

Re: any one got any helpful ideas ?
Id try the nmc at a different time of day and see what answer you get - the nmc are notoriously inconsistent with advice, and as for telling you you need midwifery and then not knowing the exact time spec is just plain incompetent. typical nmc.
ask them what you need to do exactly, and dont hang up until you get a definitive answer - get stroppy if need be, the nmc are such dopes it wont hit a nerve anyway
