You know you are in NZ when you realise......

That when you see a trailer full of rusty fridges, old chairs, battered mattresses, battered kids bikes.......

.......you don't know if they are off to the recycling or off on holiday.

Clue: if there are a couple of kayaks on top it is holiday.

The alternative option is to sling all of the above into the back of your boat.

It's people like that that sucked all the joy out of camping for us, just what you want eh to turn up at the campsite and find yourself surrounded by these travelling bogans who totally take over the place with everything and the kitchen sink, a beer fridge and their generators and TVs blaring out loud.

There's a guy round our way who has converted an old shopping trolley into a trailer for his pushbike so he can collect old washing machines or fridges one at a time.

Steptoe and Son eat your heart out !

You know you are in NZ when you realise that trailers full of firewood are being purchased in January are to be stored away to be used as fuel for the wood burner for the mid year winter months.

You know you are in NZ when you see a house on a lorry transporter (or 2 transporters with half the house on each). This is literally 'moving house' the Kiwi way.

Yeah, a house travelling towards you when you are driving is an, um, interesting experience !

You know you are in NZ when you see a wooden house/shed on the back of a lorry and realise it is a home made camper!
We have seen some amazing examples of leading edge carpentry, sometimes multi-storey.
I'm not convinced that these would be legal in the UK.

Similarly with the assortment of shabby old homemade sheds, rusty old 1950s caravans, 'modified' ambulances, buses and such like that are parked permanently in people's garden and pass as a sleep-out / holiday rental / spare bedroom for guests.

Slight change to this... A mobility Scooter with trailer, stops of at every recycling box to collect the aluminium cans from them.

You know you are in NZ when you see the gas water heater on the OUTSIDE of the house, with no lagging on the water pipes either.

You know you are in New Zealand when the front page headline of a national paper is about some kiwi surviving Graham Nortons red chair

Name me another country that would class that as breaking news :)

I guess one of them had to make it eventually, there does seem to be a very high ratio of Kiwis that have a go on the red chair.

You know you are in NZ when the tanker for emptying cess pits has "Yesterday's meal on wheels" in sign writing on the back :-)

This one had us doing a double take and chortling. Definitely wouldn't be allowed as a name in the UK!

There's a sign heading into Chch down Marshlands road that says "have you got your crack out?" It's a screen repair service for laptops, phones etc. Gave me a wee chuckle on my morning commute!

You know you are in NZ when you realise that wife beater is a T shirt with bits missing, not a 6 pack of Stella Artois.
