I had assumed that our yobbish Australian neighbours paid a higher rate of tax than those here (after all for a long time Australia had a right wing government pushing very capitalist ideals). Apparently not however until you make N.Z. $140k+ :

Before I could meaningfully compare tax rates and inequality graphs I would need to understand better what is and isn't included in the calculations. The tax graph is fairly self explanatory, but only applies to earners. The inequality assessment is more complex.

Some factors that immediately spring to mind are unemployment level, ratio of full time to part time employees, minimum wage, proportion of all earners on the minimum wage, unemployment benefit levels, social security income and low earner income supplements.

Then, should you be comparing individual incomes or household incomes?

Complicated isn't it! :blink:

even worse when you ask how much of that income is being spent on goods/services attracting GST?

how can those who put together the graph possibly determine what proportion of income is being spent that way?

one thing this does show is that the poor are disproportionately taxed in NZ compared to the rich.........no surprise there.......:thumbdown:

BTW, our Aussie contributor confirms the old addage about emigration to Aus from NZ and the resulting IQ inequalities :lol: :eek:

Kiwis may be clever and innovative but they are rubbish at converting research and ideas into money.

This is exemplified for me by a man called Colin Murdoch who was a pharmacist and vet from Timaru. Amongst other things he invented tranquiliser guns, silent burglar alarms, those bottle tops parents have to ask their kids to get off and disposable hypodermic needles. When he invented the latter he went to the Department of Health who quickly established his invention was “unnecessary” and too futuristic. Of course without any backing he couldn’t defend the patent.

It’s like being the #1 team until world cups, interesting...but pointless.

doesn't surprise me about innovation - Kiwis like it (more like using what you have to solve the problem) but not too much true innovation.......I suppose it grates a little as many are really conservative.
