Default Xtra broadband is rubbish

I really have had no luck with the old broadband since being in HAwkes Bay. First we tried the wonderment of a Vodem 3G brilliant idea, only reception like it was mounted on a fly pass jet.

So reluctantly we switch and get a landline and xtra, its soooooooooooo sloooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww compared to Australia and the UK! AHHHHHHHH

Have I just got unlucky with my provider or it is all slllloooooowwwww in NZ?

Try sending a few pics and the things slower than a granny with a hangover.

Moan finished now, thanks, obviously by the time this post has actually made it to the board I will have finished a chapter of shakespeare.

I just tested mine - 5.7MBps download, 593kbps up, that's with Orcon's unlimited plan. Why not do a test here:
http://www.nzdsl.co.nz/module-Speedtest.phtml
and post your results

Orcon are very good. I switched a few months ago, and it's been a massive improvement over xtra, and I got two months free. The unlimited plan is the one to go for, otherwise it can get a bit expensive.

6.24 MBps down and 315 KBps up

www.orcon.net.nz - you can switch it all online, just need your telecom account number.

Oh thanks for the heads up on this - broadband is mega important for my work so good to know Orcon will be the ticket for my currency trading when we arrive in Sept/Oct!!

Cheers!

We use Orcon too - MUCH better than Xtra ever was. Also if you change from Xtra, use that D-Link modem as a door stop like we do and get another one.
They use Xtra firmware and we had loads of issues until I got a new one.

3962 down, 123 up

Though the modem tells me it's connected at 6512/160

I'm going to try Orcon too then - i thought they didn't come down as far as Auckland. I HATE Xtra - ours is ridiculously slow. Be careful of that Go Large (unlimited) plan too as they operate a 'fair usage' policy which means that if you download tv programmes etc they slow you down to a snail's pace from 4pm. :curse:
