Default IT Work in NZ

Hi there,

it's been suggested that I post with IT in the title!

My husband is currently a Telecommunications Engineer - or something like that!

What are the chances of actually getting a job before we go to NZ?

Thanks for any advice!

Hi there,
As good as anything. My husband got an IT job in NZ, he has no university qualification but 25 years experience. Post your CV everywhere and anywhere. We went to the Expo in Manchester and applied everywhere, this is were the job came from.

So apply, apply, apply to all companies and everywhere, good luck.

We are moving about 21 May 07 and just can't believe it! Although the cost of medicals for five of us is bringing us back to earth with a bump

Good luck, I am having another glass of wine

My approach would be slightly different due to the geography involved - do the searches on job sites and find the agencies with heavy presence, choose a few and build up a rapport with them - don't just email the cv and hope for the best, as they get swamped daily with people wanting to emigrate, you really have to take a few weeks or even months gently knocking on the door of a few agencies until you find one or two that really think you're serious. Do this by phone and email - once they know you're serious (you have to convince them) they'll go out of their way to help you and get your CV to the right people at the right companies. One other point is that the business world in NZ is much smaller than the UK, don't piss anyone off because they all know each other and it is extremely incestuous!

Have a look at the government jobs website:
http://www.jobs.govt.nz/jobs/search.aspx
I know some govt depts will recruit from overseas on the basis of a telephone or VTC interview if you have the right skills.

Agreed - it's important to talk to the agents.

And I was amazed how small a world IT is in Wellington - everyone knows everyone!!

Got any recommendations for UK based job sites that run NZ jobs? I've found a couple of jobs on reed.co.uk but not many other sites seem to list NZ jobs.

I used to work in IT recruitment in the UK, and have been in touch with a few companies in NZ, my experience with specialised recruitment such as IT (from my background) and Financial (husbands background) is that most companies don't even advertise for jobs - if a job has got to advertise stage then they are desperate. The best way to find a job is via the agencies who will recognise a candidate with good skills set and be able to recommend them to a company - if a company then agrees they will even create a role in order to grab onto a good candidate. Reed do some advertising, from memory there are some other London based agencies who are more satellite offices for agencies based in Australia/NZ who will do some advertising - but in my experience the people in the know and the ones you need to have the communication lines with are those on the ground in NZ, generally in Wellington or Auckland.
Good luck
