will this cause me to fail a medical? please help.

hello everyone, just joined today to this site and already feeling so overwhelmed at just the thought of living anywhere but where i know! :)

id like to ask a quick question if that is okay. before i get my mind set on leaving for pastures new(or attempting to anyway), id like to ask if anyone knows what can fail a medical? the reason i ask is that i suffer from 'ectopic heartbeats' and am on a beta blocker(self paid) daily. my husband would love with all his heart to immigrate and inside i am so scared that my condition could burst his bubble. as we havent actually started the process yet, it would be so much easier if we knew if i would fail the medical because of it.

its a long shot, but anyone have any ideas? ive looked on the net and cant find anything. :(

thank you very much for reading.

Hi there & welcome!
Totally understand your concerns... it may help you if you look at the 'medical handbook' on NZIS, I think it would be wise to take a recent ECG with you when (if) you go for your medical, they (NZIS) are primarily concerned about the possible implications, costs etc of medical probs .... HTH

Hi and welcome :) to BE. I and my hubby have just both had e-mail to say we have been referred to the medical assessor :sneaky: not a surprise for me as I have a high bmi and some past surgery so will need to get reports etc for the MA, however, surprised for my hubby to be sent as very fit and healthy, he did have day surgery a few weeks ago to have a lypoma removed (fatty lump) from back of his kneck, so am hoping it is just due to that  Ask away for anything, this site has helped us so much since we joined and everyone is real friendly and helpful.

Keep posting.

Tina. x

hiya! thanks for reply...

can you let me know where this handbook is? nzsi? is that a website? sorry to sound stupid, this is all new to me. my ecg is fine now because of taking meds. i have a structurally normal heart as shown on echo by a consultant around a year ago. loads of people have ectopic beats, just unfortunate i have loads of them.

can i just ask as you sound like you know what you are talking about....lets say they said, nope, medical failed. does this mean i cannot go live say new zealand for example under another way? private healthcare insurance? also, if they didnt pass my medical, can you appeal? can my consultant write a letter?

sorry to ask all the questions, i am such a worrier!

hiya tina, thanks for reply:D

sorry to hear you have to wait to find out whats going on. just the medical process seems so difficult in itself! can i ask what they did at your medical? what tests did they do? oh i hate doctors and hospitals!!!!:)

am i right in thinking that even if you do have health problems, if they are not major, you can still pass? surely people like diabetics, or those who have had heart attacks can still immigrate??!!

this site seems lovely already

Hi and Welcome Anna , me and OH have just been worrying ourselves too about our medical results (so ur not alone) like other knowlegable posties say - refer to handbook - and the medicals are quite ok - general health questions (which would include ur meds and medical hx) and eye test general once over - and blood test and xrays etc..
Try not to over worry yet, it would be fairly assessed ...

Hi anna
medical handbook on nz immigration gov site www.immigration.govt.nz look under medical bits like list of panel Doctors, also look at the medical & chest x ray forms ...it will give you an idea of what to expect.

I would get hold of a copy of consultant report (echocardiogram) and take that with you...you are asked if you are taking any medications so would have to mention the B blockers, report would back up if needed by Doc.

Had my medical this week and it really is straight forward!! I am a nurse (as are lots of others on here) and had been really stressed about it all.... but honestly was ok!

which part of uk are you in? ...I ask because there are probably people on here who have already used your nearest panel Dr and they could help re-assure you....as the lovely Bernie says 'try not to over worry, you would be fairly assessed'

Dont worry ..you're not alone! at least 'worrying' won't get you referred!

Eye test ....reading off chart like at opticians, one eye covered ..can use specs if you need them ....no examination of eye involved so so long as you can read at distance you'll be fine!

Can't think of anyone in your area at the moment but sure they will make themselves known if the're around!

Had my medical in Tavistock. Devon ...you could always have a 'medical/holiday';)

Hi anna b
We had our medicals done earlier this month. out of the 4 of us the first 2 had a complication and the other 2 were fine.
1 - blood in the urine sample - rectified by going to the gp and getting them to do a full sample check at the hospital and then sending the results to show it was all clear the day after. just one of those things.

2 - 8 year old son had a heat murmur - trust us to get our medicals done by a bloke who is a cardiologist  We had to go to a specialist peadiatric consultant cardiologist thing (but not him as he had to reamain impartial) but he did pass us the details of a very nice chap. We had to get a full ECG and have a scan of his heart done (like a baby scan) to make sure it was nothing to worry about.
Obviously this lead to a couple of weeks sweating about several implications i.e. how serious is it, will he need surgery, how come the gp never (and still cant) hear it, will we still be able to live our dream?????? :(
Anyway it turns out its just a soft murmur, :thumbsup:lots of kids have them, and the consultant was happy to sign off the medicals to the immigration after he had seen the results from the paediatric chap (on headed notepaper and signed by the consultant only )

Time will tell if this is going to come back and bite us, but for now, alls well.

Hang in there - if this was easy, everyone would do it, and we wouldnt want that now would we xx

Best of luck

Re: will this cause me to fail a medical? please help.

My mother in law failed her first medical then went back on medication, which she had stupidly stopped taking because she felt better! Went for another medical and it was borderline, then they kept sending her for test after test. Eventually her consultant wrote a really stroppy letter and a week later she was passed!
My son had had grommets twice and we had to get a letter from his consultant detailing all treatments and whether he thought he was cured. I have had cervical probs in past and nothing at all was mentioned about this.
