Re: Why are certain things disproportionately expensive?
We were discussing this a while back, how the shops here can afford to have massive sales every other week. Hmmm, how can they offer 30 to 50% off of EVERYTHING on a regular basis? It is such a con! Does anyone believe that Briscoes take a hit every time they have their fortnightly sales. No way, it is simply the mark-ups are so huge, they can sell all the stock for 50% off every fortnight and still make a decent profit.
Generally there are consumer laws against such selling techniques in the UK. Shops will have a sale two or three times a year to clear out the old crap that nobody wants and make room for new changing, updated models and styles of products. They have to show that the item has been for sale at the full price for a certain period of time before they can claim that it is a SALE item. Here they simply restock the shelves with the same old crap and continue selling the self same items at the higher inflated prices - until the next sale.
Same happens in the supermarkets here, its a cycle of the same old stuff that come up on rotation as specials - which tells me that the rest of the time that item is being sold well over the odds.
Moral of the story is to only ever buy things in the 'SALES' or on special. You soon learn to get with the program, the pricing is crazy. The coffee I like varies from $5.99 at full price and on special it is $3.99 Approximately every 4 or 5 weeks it comes up at the reduced price, so why would I ever pay $5.99? :curse:

also i have seen stuff in sales say for instance a lamp and ticket says was 20 quid now a tenner .peel of the sale ticket and guess what it was a tenner in the first place never 20 quid.
What everyone in NZ has to remember is that while you in Nz you see there prices and think omg thats so dear but really prices in the uk aren't much cheaper and come on its all made in china so not any better . I love next but it comes from china same as stuff in au natural for a 1/4 of the price
its all a rip off IMO

Wait 'til you get here. You'll see the difference in the way it works & the relative pricing.
I need lamp shades. The last one I looked at was over 100 bucks. That's a large some of money to us and that was just for one. That would be over a $1000 plus for the house just for starters. Mate that's well over a weeks wages.
