Why? We arrived here as part of our second RTW backpacking adventure, ran out of money, decided to get a job.
Get what we wanted? Yup, did not have any massive preconceptions, so it was easy not to be disappointed. |

Ok, gush over. I'm not at all universally liked on here though- and I think there are more than a few posters who'd rather like me to disappear, so I won't let it go to my head  |

Why did you move? My husband worked long hours in London and we had a baby - we felt that he was missing out on seeing our daughter grow up. The deciding point for us was when he was sent away on business for over a week when she was 2 1/2 months old and she didn`t recognise him when he got back.

That's not correct as far as I know. I can't think of one person that dislikes your posts & I've never heard a cross word about you or your posts.
Spoiler:
Does that count??? |

Re: Why??
Quite.
The name kinda said it all but I gave it a go anyway. Waste of time. |
Re: Why??
We came here for an adventure, better weather, room to breath (and that included space from our families and friends), the opportunities to have an outdoor life without having to share it with the rest of the UK and Europe.
We've been here just over a year and it's met all of those expectations and more. I work in Wellington and can't agree less with the earlier claim that people in the cities are less friendly. I wouldn't want to live outside of a city as, for me, it would have been too big a culture shock. I have made good friends here - at work and outside of work. Fake it till you make it and never say no to an invitation. I miss my family and friends and do feel some of them dropping away from me...but that would have happened if I'd just moved cities in the UK. The time difference is a bugger. Some days I really miss them and other days I am so grateful to live in this beautiful place. |
Re: Why??
Oh might as well reply
Working in the derivatives sector of the financial industry back in the UK, I was being made redundant more often than a banker was being blamed for the financial crisis. I was going through my 4th redundancy within 3 years and got to the stage where I thought, lets go somewhere else. I also started questioning whether I wanted to bring a family up in England as I didn't see a positive future for the young generations. I had heard my skill was on the LTSSL so I looked round for some jobs back in Britain. I applied for 3 jobs here and 2 jobs in Australia, had skype and telephone interviews for all of them. I ended up being offered 2 jobs, this one in Christchurch and a job with Telstra in Sydney. I ended up taking the Christchurch job as I thought Sydney wouldn't be for us. Even though we've been to Sydney three times and it is a fantastic city, I'm not sure if I'd want to live there. There was quite a fight for us to stay from the wifes side of the family and the wife did have second thoughts. Once the riots hit, that made her mind up - lets get out.. Has Christchurch met our expectations? We've only been here 9 months but so far it's been a huge adventure! We've had to evacuate our apartment due to Decembers underground disco, we've enjoyed the characters of Linwood, both our places of work have had to be closed and my job has taken me to places like Wellington, Auckland, Dunedin and even across the Tasman to Melbourne. We're also expecting a new arrival in October and I believe the upbringing it will have here far outweighs the upbringing back in Barking. I was pretty shocked to hear about the country being the fourth most obese country in the world as so many Christchurch residents and kids in particular are out on the parks running or playing sport etc. Obviously given the small population, that was behind why. The only negative we've got of Christchurch is the standard of parking! I don't know if it's common throughout the country but it seems no one understands how to park a car properly. Literally it's take a space and get out. It certainly gets the road rage going a bit when the only space available is too small due to other cars parked diagonally! Oh and of course no central heating but we expected from advice given by former Kiwi colleagues |
