Something that saddens me much more now that I am older and they are gone forever, is that I never saw my Grandparents and know next to nothing about them. Even at school I was always envious of friends who had 'proper' Nans and Grandads, rather than the once a year visiting type that we had.

I would say we have had more face to face time with the Grandparents since being here than we ever did when we lived in the UK, albeit on Skype and the time difference are not an issue you just have to organise to be available at a certain time, same really as if you were visiting.
Letters/cards to and from are now a regular thing and are treasured items and things to look back and means we can keep up to date on even the small things going on. FB for photo's is also a great tool for wider family members.

I would agree to have some money available for possible unforeseen circumstances so factor it in to money to move over. If that is not possible then there is always family members/friends/banks that could lend money if the need arises.
