Hi folks,

We are planning to arrive in September on a 3 year, Long Term Business Visa (Btw, I'll be glad to answer any questions from those interested in applying for this visa if I can help). Although our passports are stamped up and we know that our children will be entitled to state education, we can't seem to find out whether we are also eligible for state healthcare? Even immigration are not sure !

Any knowledge on this one? I'm thinking that making private provision may be the safest option - but not really sure where to start with that. Any recommendations and price indications gratefully received

Hi May be able to help you, my understanding is yes to helthcare I have had someone arrived on the Long Term Business Visa and they received Helthcare but its not like the Uk.!!!! We do pay to visit the doctor, some charge around $28 to $35 per child per visit, Adults pay around $35.00 per visit and a nurse visit can cost around $25.00.
We have private health cover part is paid by my husbands company but we top up for Glasses and specialist fees and that is costing us $160.00 per month and well worth as it also covers us with the dentist.
Welcome to the site you should get lots of help with this

Thanks so much for this info, most gratefully received I can assure you

I checked out the cost of an 'all-in' bupa family package. This worked out at over $13k per yearnot good at all!

Do you use a private company for your top-up provision? Someone you can recommend as I may need to set this up before we travel

Hi flibberty gibberty
I just wondered what you eventually decided to do. Could you please post an update as this issue will affect us when we arrive.

Had private health cover since 1987 in the UK and my action plan on arriving last month was to activate my bank account, order my IRD tax number, sign up for a phone contract to get my Blackberry fully working and then to sign up with Southern Cross.

While I still looking for work, I wanted to know that I was covered after my one-way travel insurance expired.

Glad i dont live where you are lol, my daughter doesnt pay a thing, free prescriptions etc and for us we are $25 a visit, i have been very happy with the service here regarding health care. my daughter and i just spent a week in hospital as she had a very bad kidney infection and was on a drip, everything was free and they also supplied all my meals free of charge too and a bed for me also
. another thing i have been happy about was a couple of weeks ago i had to get new migraine tablets as my uk lot just werent working for me, well the script cost me $3 the government subsidised the other $180, to think i have been buying stuff over the counter all this time

Another thing i forgot, we have looked into private health care here incase something happens to us and we need to pay extra, anyway it was quite reasonable im sure it was around $80 a month and it covered a LOT we didnt look to take out the dental and eye cover as i had laser surgery so perfect eyesight and gary still has perfect vision too. and the dental surgery is really resanoble here and she is amazing, best dentist i have ever had for sure
