Hi,
I am new to this site, and have been busy reading all about individual experiences so far. We too have two children aged five and seven, so your post caught my eye. We have completed our EOI on line, and have 140 points so should be automatically be selected for an ITA. I am finding it very difficult to get a grasp on the timing of things, and as such we are waiting to press the submit button. Although i know the next step can take some time, I am also concerned that if it does turn out to be too quick, we will be rushed into making a decision. At this moment in time we havn't even been to New Zealand, so we only have books and research to go on! Our fact finding mission is planned for April 07, so ideally we will have a better idea of where we want to live after that. I am a Registered Sick Children's Nurse and will hopefully get work quite easily, and my husband will need to find a job also. My biggest concern is that the children will be well sorted. Do you have any ideas on how to look at schools, establish good areas for kids etc. etc.

It depends how quick you want to go to nz.the online expression of interest needs 140 points to automatically be selected and offered to apply for residency.Without a job,we had 130 points but we were selected as we both have skills in areas nz needs. When you get your invitation to apply, you have 4 months to get all your paperwork together inc.medicals, police checks, etc. You all need a medical but only those over 18 yrs need a chest xray and blood tests. After returning your paperwork it could be another 1 to 3 months before you are approved for residency, that is if you still don"t have a job offer. We are there at the moment trying to sell our house. If you get a job offer then residency is approved very quickley.
I hope this helps.I don"t know anything about work visa as we didn"t go down that route as we still had our house to sell and weren"t in a desperate rush to go.

If you are not even sure you want to move to NZ, than why not figure that out before you submit the EOI and save the money. It will be up to a month before you are invited to apply for PR, you will have four months to submit your information from that date and if you remain without a job offer, it will take four months or so for them to decide on you. So that is about 9 months all together. Then you can add 6 months by not paying your new migrant levy until then. Now you are at September 2007. From the time you have paid your levy and have your stickers you then have another 12 months to show up. Now the date is September 2008. However, why not decide if you want to go or not first.

Next you were mentioning your kids. We have four children. They currently make friends very well, do well at school, though don't listen to their parents as well as I would like. They are therefore quite normal. I think people tend to worry too much about how the kids will settle in. I don't worry about them if I put them in swimming lessons, football or gymnasitcs or any other new situation. Surprise, they meet the new situation just fine.

Your kids will be fine, just decide if you want to do it or not and don't look back. It works best that way. We ulitmately declined our first ITA issued to us in December 2004. We decided to go again in September 2005. We are now just waiting for the house to sell. While we have more money because of the wait, we are wishing we had just finished it the first time.

Good luck

Hi

Can't help you with the kids stuff, but can help with timings and things and the job front.

See my profile for our time line. We got PR last week.

We are both nurses and got jobs in Tauranga easier than getting a job in UK - without travelling! we searched the websites for HealthBoards, then located a contact email on web site and emailed. Got really good contact/communication and had both secured jobs within a few weeks. we had telephone interviews and everything else was done via email.post.

We hope to travel in August providing nothing goes wrong with the house.

Having a job secured speeds up the EOI/ITA process as you are prioritised. We didn't get our jobs until after we had been selected for EOI, so it didn't speed us up until submitting the ITA.

Hope this helps, PM me if you have any specific questions about nursing/jobs - just a little nudge though - Gill from Gill and Rob is also a nurse in NZ and she was very helpful to us when we were applying!

Nicola

Sure that this had been asked many times before, but we could really use advice/guidance you may have.

My partner (not married), myself and my children (2 of, aged 12 & 8) want to move to Auckland, NZ. I've got a general education but some good experience in specialist areas and he has a professional qual (MCIPS). We're trying to establish what we need to do...we've had a good look around the immigration site, but feel confused re visas and applications. From what I can see, both he and I need to get police certificates and medical certs and also for the eldest child - but will he require a policecert also? Will both the children?

As neither of us has applied for visas or jobs yet, I would guess we need to get the visa through first - and this is where the confusion starts.

Do we:

Apply for a work visa or a residence visa? Do we get this first and then apply for a job? Do we apply for jobs once we've moved to NZ or before?

We noted that on the work visa, it said that "your partner or children cannot be included in your application". Would we have to apply separately then (unless we marry before leaving the UK?)

We've got enough money to support ourselves without needing a job for the first 2 years, we believe, but would want something before/very shortly after arriving. We don't know where to start!

BTW, my partners father has NZ citizenship, but lives in the UK - how does this affect us?
You should be able to get a NZ passport for him and travel withhim as his dependent - check with London embassy.
