Hi Tony & Helen..What area you want to rent in really depends on where you will be working, you can then consider the comute time, also what you like doing dictates where you want to rent....Do you want beaches on your doorstep,do you prefer rural areas? We are in the eastern suburbs of Auckland, lovely hear,OH works in central Auckland,he leaves early in the morning so the comute takes him about 35mins into the CBD...and he thinks its an easy drive...you also have more rural area round here,Clevedon,Beachlands that area which would add about another 20 mins on to your comute into CBD...
In this area you would be paying roughly from about $350 to $600 wekkly on rent, depending on number of bedrooms and area...hope this helps...but research your area carefully, and ask loads of questions we will give you our honest opinions as there are some not so good areas in NZ...hope this helps...Jacky

Hi Tony & Helen, It's so difficult trying to decide from half way around the world where to rent and what suits some people may not suit others. We did a 2 week recce before we came out and fell in love with the North Shore and that's where we are currently renting. Like Jacky says, it all depends on which area you choose and what your expectations are. Here in Albany we are only 8 mins from the nearest beach, 3 mins from a mega shopping centre and cinema and 5 mins from the park & ride (which OH uses to get into the CBD and takes him around 25 mins). Albany is the "hub" of the North Shore so rental prices do tend to be higher. We have a 4 bedroom one level home and pay $600 pw. You will get cheaper rentals but like I have always said "you get what you pay for" and some of them are cold and damp.

However, after almost 6 months in Albany we have decided we want to try another area of Auckland and we are moving to Eastern Beach which is East Auckland. We found we get more for our money and after visiting there several times we really like it and are looking forward to moving in 2 weeks time . That is the beauty of renting you can move around. We have a property back in the UK but until the market picks up, we will not be selling. This gives us the time to move around and find where we eventually want to settle.

If you are not already aware, the best websites to check out are:

www.trademe.co.nz

www.realestate.co.nz/rental

If you do a search on both of these and select "all suburbs" in Auckland then enter your choice of bedrooms and the maximum you want to pay, it will give you an idea of what is around at the moment.

What we did was to stay in a holiday cottage for the first 2 weeks we arrived which was fully furnished and this gave us time to find a rental. Its always best to be here so you can do a drive past as they tend to make the photos look like the houses are on a large section but you will find that many are squeezed in together.

Good luck and I hope this helps. Elaine

I too am a North Shore fan and for us it's the place to live in Auckland. I find it less cluggy than other parts, and has a different, open feel than the rest. The problem with some places like Howick is that they are like a little oasis surrounded by not so nice semi-industrial areas. Whereas for us, when you cross that bridge heading north you feel you are in an open, greener, environment full of space and beaches.
