Default Where in NZ?

Hi,

Apologies if this isn't the place to be raising this but I'm down in Australia on a 3 month trip to stay with my girlfriend and see if I can handle life down under. She's an aussie and wants me to emigrate. I'm coming from the UK, seeing Shanghai and Tokyo and spending vast majority of time in Sydney. I've been to Sydney once before last year. Since I came back so many people have told me how amazing New Zealand is as a place and I have decided I can't go back for such a long time and not visit NZ. I would probably however only be able to cross the Tasman sea for a week. Anyone got any advice on where i should focus myself. I have been looking at flights return from Sydney-Auckland but is Auckland necessarily the best place to see in NZ? Any guidance much appreciated.

I guess I'm most interested in cities and culture so my idea of heaven is for example New York City but I'd be interested in seeing some of the nz wilderness. Definitely not interested in things like bungee jumping and all that carry on. I would intend to fly into one of the cities/large towns and try and see sights around a particular area so I guess I'd rather choose north or south island. Any idea how Wellington compares to Auckland? Is there any Glasgow/Edinburgh or Melbourne/Sydney style difference i.e. one that has all the real culture?

I'll go out on a limb and recommend Wellington.

It's compact, it has a bit of a cafe culture as well as plenty of watering holes. Te Papa is supposed to be a good museum. There also seems to be plenty of theatres and nightclubs as well. Outdoorsy activities are also quite near as well.

Don't expect a big city like Sydney though!!

Wellington is the place for a bit of culture. The museums are excellent.

If you're based in Wellington you can get up to Taupo and Rotorua for a couple of days and see the thermal stuff, and a volcano or two on the way. Maybe Waitomo Caves on the way as well.

If you want to see real NZ wilderness the South Island around Queenstown and the West coast are the places to see, but a week doesn't give you very long.

Have a look at the links in my signature for lots of photos of our trips around NZ. It might give you some inspiration about what you want to see.

Auckland reminds me of Sydney in many ways, obviously it hasn't got the type of skyline that Sydney does but it does have a similar climate and association with the water. I'd recommend Auckland in preference to Wellington - Welly (despite being the capital) feels more run-down and smaller than Akl.

Things to do/see in Akl -Domain Museum and War Memorial, Sky Tower, Volcanoes (esp. Mount Eden) Harbour ferries, nightlife on Karangahape Road, cafe culture, The Viaduct, Rangitoto Volcanic Island, Sky casino, Mission Bay beach, Kelly Tarltons. A few hours south and a bit further afield - Taupo and Rotorua (approx 4 hrs by car)

The Hilton is a good place to stay and you can get good deals on wotif.com

If you are doing Australia first then I would recommend flying into Christchurch and seeing as much of the South Island as possible. Thats the bit that is more distinctively NZ in my opinion, and was probably what people had in mind when they said NZ was amazing.

A week could let you see a good selection of glaciers, mountains, Fiordland and Central Otago/Mackenzie Country lakes. Christchurch and Dunedin are the two cities that have a bit to do when visiting.

Enjoy your trip...

Welly is Edinburgh, Auckland is Glasgow, imho of course

Wellington offers you easy access to the Wairarapa wine regions, the Kapiti coast, even across to the South Island on the ferry or 25 mins flight to Nelson and there is some amazing scenery and plenty to do up in Abel Tasman national park or Golden Bay.

But get yourself down to Queenstown and that area, Milford Sound, Te Anau, Wanaka, Franz Josef...

I'd go the other way, Welly over Auckland, Auckland is like Sydney as Melbourne is to Wellington I think, and Melbourne is my fav city in Aussie, so there you go!! Bit more relaxed, more going on, and just a nice place to randomly wander around

Lol!! never heard Wellington compared to Melbourne before they've both got trams, but there the similarity ends for me.

A week really isn't long enough to do a country like NZ though is it. All of the major cities have something to offer and once you're in Oz you can always make another visit and catch-up on the things you missed the first time round.

True.

I've heard the Melbourne/Wellington comparison a lot. I only spent a few hours in Melbourne so I can't really say, but they reckon it has a similar "feel".
Also similar weather on the day I went there!!
