Default Where is the best place in New Zealand to teach yoga/keep fit

Hello to everyone. This is my first post and I hope someone out there can answer me. Where in New Zealand should we be looking to live. I'm a yoga instructor and my boyfriend is a personal trainer. Would we be better finding jobs in a big city like Aukalnd or should we look at somewhere more rural? Someone has told me that Queens Town (sp?) is a very spiritual place and yoga is big there but I'm not sure if my boyfriend would find work easily there. I don't have access to the internet very often so if I don't reply straight away please don't think I'm being rude.
Thanks. Lisa.

Hi Yoga Lady,

Looking at the number of listings for Yoga Classes and Fitness Instructors on the NZ Yellow Pages it looks as though you should head for the Auckland Region, with Wellington Region next choice and maybe Christchurch as a third possibility.

In rural areas you may struggle to get the numbers you need to hold a class.

Good luck with everything!

Welcome to the Forum.....when we were in NZ travelling it was surprising the amount of Spiritual stuff there is going on! for a country full of ruffy Tuffys, our Niece is going over in August and is hoping to open a Reiki / Holistic healing business ........so i would not be too downhearted....personal trainer (depending on the qualifications / specialisms) would be quite sought after

Could you get by by opening a few classes and your boyfriend working?

Try this link

And this link

You may be able to get to NZ on an entrepreneurial visa.......what does everyone else think?

Hi NZ is very small, to make money in your lines of business, you would have to be in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch.
Wellington is very compact, cosmopolitan and very fitness driven.

All the best Kevin

I'm no expert as we're going over as skilled migrants but I would assume that the entrepreneurial visa would require a certain amount of capital...just a thought. I would agree that the areas with a larger population density would be more suitable for this kind of work, however there might be more competition. If your heart is set on Queenstown, you might want to contact deedee (check the members list) who may be able to give some advice, although deedee is a farmer so may not be entirely au fait with your profession. Sending you some welcome karma.

Come to Rotorua - Open a good - and not expensive Yoga suite - as well as a gym - with a creche that opens sensible hours - not just mornings for 3 hours, and make it a nice one - also include a nice atmosphere - much like gyms and studios at home - and you'll make a killing! ALl the gyms here are either old and crappy, the Yoga studio is hideuosly expensive, or the creche's are crap hours. All the gyms are more than a little tatty. I have not worked out since getting here as I have found a gym I like and I miss it like hell. PLEASE come...

There is a reason the gyms are tatty and you have not found a good one and thats you don't have the population in a place like Rotorua, to support them. It is a place that exits on tourists and they are short stay.

Sorry - but have to disagree - the gyms are all busy - but no money spent on making them look nice, not like at home. Also, the way classes are offered is not as flexible as it could be - the best gym I was a member of was in Waiuku - a small gym, a little tatty, but creche and classes were so flexible it made keeping fit a breeze, and waiuku is a very very small community.

That may be the case Shellie but if you ever get the time to look at some of the gyms in the bigger cities you will find they are all very modern & full of the latest equiptment. IMHO both yoga lessons & personal trainer would have no problem setting up in any major city. The fitness craze took over in a big way years ago & doesnt appear to be slowing down. Some of the big name chain type gyms can be a little expensive but in most cities if one shops around memberships can be found at reasonable prices.

As far as NZ'ers not being able to afford this type of thing on their income Im amazed that gym memberships are so high then

Thank you for this everybody, you're really very kind. We've decided we're going to come over in November for a holiday (through both islands) so we'll have a good luck at all the gyms and leisure centres and see what we think. Thank you so much for taking the time to respnd to me. Lisa.
