When your belongs arrive in NZ, what happens?

My mum has got Obssessive compulsive disorder and she's worried that when all our stuff arrives in new zealand the customs or whoever checks things in the container they open up every box and rumage through our stuff.

Anyone who has made the move know what happens?

hi it will be randomly x rayed at the port then movers will bring to you normally the only people to look inside are MAF, and they are only intrested in garden furniture tools or non treated wood, the movers should tell them when your container is being delivered,
when ours came they took about two hours to come then looked in about 25 boxs took a few leaf,s and that was that

Oh that's good that they x ray it. I was wondering how they will find out what boxes to look in, that explains it.

Thanks for that.

Your shippers will advise you on the full and proper documentation and procedures. You have to list everything box by box and each box is numbered so that MAF know which boxes to put to inspect. It's best to keep all the things that MAF will want to inspect in the same box/s to make it cheaper as they charge by the box.

Haha, yeah things you think are precious to ya and you don't need to throw out turn out to be a load of junk that isn't needed one bit.

@cappuccino - yeah I suggested that to my mum about putting everything they might want to inspect in the same box. I read somewhere on here about cleaning everything with jeyes fluid before you pack it?

Concretepump are you sure that they randomly xray it? I thought they pulled out items that may need to be inspected and also randomly opened others as they saw fit?

no i mean containers, they haven't got the time to xray every container that comes into port, so they are randomly x rayed,
maf will inspect every box that has any thing to do with the outside or untreated wood bikes garden pots ect

When our stuff arrived Crown advised us that MAF would attend at the house as they delivered it to us.
He had already seen the list of what we were bringing in and he wanted to check the bikes, garden furniture, tools (not just garden ones), christmas decorations (cut all the pine cones off my twee :frown:), outside toys, my hoover and the Piano.
It seemed he was going from the list alone and wasnt bothered about any of the other boxes.
It is probably down to the fact that the packers packed and relocated everything - if they trust that the packers wouldnt pack anything untoward they are less stressy about whats in the boxes.

It wasnt that bad an experience for us but some folks get it real tough x

good luck

No they go from the packing list for that, the x-ray is to make sure the container doesnt contain BIG problems like cars in containers that shouldnt have them in, nuclear weapons, chemical drums etc, it canĀ“t tell which boxes have your xmas decs in...
